The video starts off with saying this is a normal practice session after the 2012 olympic games.
Lu Yong is getting ready for the 2013 worlds. His coach is not asking too much from him because he has proven himself on international stage. His coach believes Lu Yong still has a dream to win a championship.
Lu Yong was born 1986 1/1. In his native town there is a culture of visiting friends and relatives so when Lu was young he often visited his relative, a distant uncle of his named Lan Shizhang, who was a former world champion in the 54 kg class, and the only Chinese to ever lift 3xBW.
Lan was the 1997 world champion, with Snatch silver and Total and Clean and Jerk gold. Lu saw his uncle’s many medals and put them on his neck lol and said in the future he wants to win medals too. Ever since then, Lu was bond to weightlifting.
Lu goes on and says he use to pay with wheel barrels and lift them for fun. Lan Yan Yun is the principal and weightlifting head coach of this school, she is Lu Yong’s first coach, and Lu calls her “big sister.”
Lan yan yun discovered Lu Yong one day when he was playing basketball and she referred to Lu as the “fat kid who looked like a tiger“.
She asked him if he is interested in weightlifting and he said yes, and also mentioned his uncle. She was very happy to hear that because she knows the uncle personally from back in the day and she saw Lu Yong as a talent to grab. Lu yong was 12 year olds that year.
Lan mentioned Lu has naturally good posture with a big chest, aka rooster chest. Lu Yong’s parents initially didn’t him to train because they thought it would make him short. But Lu liked it so much so his parents had no real objections.
2002, Lu Yong placed well in a nice local meet and the Guangxi coach (province coach) Tao Chuang noticed him and wanted to train him. So now lu finally becomes a province lifter after training as an amateur.
He was 2 years or so late being allowed to train in the province team. He noticed the banners and pictures up in the gym of the past famous lifters and noticed an empty space, and he said his goal was for his picture to be up there.
Then the video goes on and says how Lu trains very hard, is very focused, and stays after practice to work on technique. His coach says he lifts very confidently. Lu then says technique is very important and if you are off by a bit, you will miss.
2006 Lu Yong was diagnosed with a sickness and the doctor said he might not be able to lift anymore. Lu Yong wanted to train with empty barbell at the hospital but doctor would not let him. So he used a bamboo stick or something to train.
He had to leave the team and go home to rest but he told his coaches and everyone he would be back for 2008 Olympic games. He says everyone was very supportive of him, and he says he cannot give up on his goals and he is very stubborn.
After returning home for half a year, he recovered completely but a lot of people didn’t think he would be back as good because he lost a lot of strength.
But after training half year, lu yong’s strength was back to about 70-80 percent due to his diligent hard work. he won silver at World Championships in Doha.
Lu Yong had foot injury in 2007. A normal human foot has 206 bones, but his had one extra. The doctor said he has two options: surgery or conservative treatment. Lu chose treatment because he wanted to go to the 2008 Olympic games.
The doctor put a cast on his foot at the start and everyday Lu went to the gym and trained with the cast on his foot. He could only do strength work for legs and upper body due to cast.
After the doc allowed him to remove the cast, Lu found out he got stronger and all his lifts including Snatch and Clean and Jerk improved. He recorded 394kg Total a month later at a team training session/mock meet.
2008 Olyimpics. Rybakou is 5kg ahead in Snatch and makes 209 in the Clean & Jerk. Lu Yong goes to 214 and makes it, thinking he got the gold as he was preparing to lift a World Record.
However the judges later ruled his lift not good and Lu Yong is very frustrated. He felt like he went from heaven to hell within a minute.
Lu Yong goes for his second attempt and will not be denied…
Lu Yong becomes 2008 Olympic champion. He later loses at 2012 Olympic games. He says if you can win, then you need to learn to lose, accept reality.
It is just natural of the sport he says, and only when you can accept defeat, can you claim victory. He wants to go to the Rio games. He went back home and continued to train hard. Older coaches says Lu is the representation of the new generation of Chinese lifters and a symbol of hard work and perseverance.
During his off time from training Lu gives advice to younger lifters. the commentator says maybe the next champion will come from here.
During his free time Lu likes to play pool, collect antiques, and read books.
Then they say during one of Guangxi’s droughts, Lu auctioned his world championship gold medal for 100k yuan, and gave all it away to his hometown for the droughts.
He says he feels obligated to give back to his home, and will do whatever it takes to help people and society if he is called upon.

Would love a translation on this. Lu Yong and Andrei Aramnau were the lifters that got me interested in weightlifting in 2008, after watching the Olympics.
I remember looking at Rybakov’s clean and jerks and thinking “aren’t those press-outs?”, but they got passed. Then they made Lu Yong re-do the 214 kg attempt, and he nailed it the second time, a very impressive performance under pressure.
Leviathar says
I dont consider rybakovs jerk pressouts but they were bad (his elbows was bad xD) But yeah, lu yong rocked that 214 clean and jerk 3rd atttempt
Victor says
I’d say his 200 and 209 looked bad but passable. His 204 looked like he crossed the line and should have been called for the obvious bend in his right elbow.

Thanks very much as well!
Never knew that he wanted 219 for his third but of course now thinking about it makes perfect sense. The way he did those 214 twice I think he would’ve got it. Man, can you imagine a 399 total? *wallows*
Victor says
I heard elsewhere, they had planned a 216 third lift for the Olympic clean and jerk and World total record. Some guy on Lu’s preparation squad said, he told Lu not to be bothered by the decision to DQ his 214, but take the third lift just as if it were the planned 216. We’ll never know what was to be lifted…
Victor says
Wait, I just listened to it. It does not say he was prepared to do 219; it says, “…as he was preparing to lift a World Record…” which is in line with the 216 from what I heard for a total 396 WR.
Gregor says
Thanks, I added that part.
Blair Lowe says
Loved watching this and Lu Yong hit that lift.
