Hi, I run ATG.
Follow me on instagram @gregorwinter (and ATG @atginsta).

Looks like Ilya front squatted to depth there. Anyone know of more videos of Ilya squatting (besides the ~250kg to parallell one)?
Cub says
He’s not purposely squatting to parallel…with his limb lengths, thickness, and ankle flexibility, that’s where his legs stop. Check out the latest cover of MILO for a good pic, he’s on the cover and has 228 in the hole.

the video I was referring to where he is purposely doing a partial…it made me wonder how often he squatted like this.
Cub says
I remembered that video, at least I thought I did. Went back and watched it again, that very well does clearly look like a partial. Interesting.
Doogie McDougald says
Who cares if this guy quarter squats, goblet squats, or hack squats. His resume speaks for itself and whatever he does works for him.
Turku says
We’re not trolling or criticising, so I’m not sure what you’re getting at.
I care *why* he partial squats if it is/was in fact a regular movement in his training. The reason behind could be of some consequence to anyone considering how to design the training of a weightlifter.
Something which could relate: remember those long time ago (2006 santo domingo?) attempts by Ilya at the 94kg WR where he could not stand the weight up in the last half or third of the clean recovery? Use of partials is a possible treatment for that weakness.
Cub says
Suited powerlifters do very similar things by box squatting with different height boxes, so it could be possible that he does partials for the same reasons.
I remember those early lifts. Also, with many of his heavy cleans like at the 2005 WWC, his hips would shift to the right as he was standing if I remember correctly. As you said, perhaps this is his method for hitting that area of weakness. Whatever he’s done it’s seemed to work as most of his missed lifts in the few training videos out there and on his facebook are during the jerk portion.
Doogie McDougald says
Try it out and see if it works for you.
Cub says
My weakness is at depth, not at the hips.

This is a great video and what blows me a away of these training room footage is the relative ease of these folks squatting. When you see Salami with 325 on his back it looks as though he is squatting light weight. Perfect position and effortless looking drive out of the hole.
