2013 Worlds 85kg Highlights w/ Apti Aukhadov, Ivan Markov, Artem Okulov

November 1, 2013 By Gregor Winter

Here are the 85kg Highlights from the 2013 World Weightlifting Championships.

Some said they were disappointed by this group… something I can not second at all.

Ivan Markov’s and Artem Okulov’s PBs and of course Apti Audakov Aukhadov‘s style made for a great watch.

By the way, Apti and Vasiliy will be at Catalyst Athletics (17.Nov.) and Waxman’s Gym (24.Nov). If you sign up before 8.11 you can get in for just $150 US. All info here.

Agree, very entertaining category. Happy for Artem Okulov, such a nice guy! (Not that Apti wasnt one)

I’ve been watching the competition on youtube (Frank Rothwell? has been uploading them). I’m really looking forward to the 85kg category (only at the 69’s). It looks like it’s going to be quite a battle!

I’m also insanely jealous of the seminars popping up in the States. I’d love it if they came to Canada.

    that’s a lot of money for a seminar …

Compared to a lot of the other lifting seminars that get offered in the US & Canada and it really isn’t that bad. Most two-three day seminars are well north of $500 and they don’t have a World Champion/Olympic medalist. Given the state of WL in Canada/US (one medalist at the Olympics, Canadian Christine Girrard :D) I think it’s worthwhile.

Honestly, if I hadn’t taken a week’s vacation to Virginia Beach I would have lined up one of these. By the time they were announcing dates and price we had already booked everything else.

why did you choose to vacation in va beach of all places? lol

It was warmer than Thunder Bay and we were able to stay there for a week for free 🙂 We went down there just to get away from things and get some lifting in. It was the off season so beach wasn’t crowded. Ate some good food, had some good drinks, got some really good lifting (PR’d pretty much everything) and caught the Panthers vs. Vikings game on the way home.

The only thing disappointing about the 85’s was Zelinski. As soon as he missed his opener I knew that Apti wasn’t going to be challenged for the gold. Other than Zwarycz and Bonk the poles seemed entirely unprepared for this event – odd considering their strong performance at nationals just before.

I agree. It seems something went wrong with the preparation. Or timing. I thought the whole polish team would go monster 🙂 I also would have liked to see Apti to produce a world record before he goes up to the 94’s. Nice competition anyway. Good for them.

I have an insider info that Adrian was struggling to get to the competition body weight as late as 1 day before 85! While I am sure lifters are used to this kind of stuff, I believe it had an affect on his performance. I think he even mentions it afterward in one of his interviews.

Yes that 90+ BW seemed very high for me at the polish nationals. Maybe he should also consider to go up to the 94’s like Apti. Adrian is still very young and looked absolutely comfortable with that higher body weight.
When I was lifting as I remember, smaller guys like 50-60 kg were losing sometimes 7-8 kgs which was absolutely harsh but I’ve never seen anybody to loose that kind of amount over 75 kgs BW. It just harder on heavier lifters.

He is actually moving up too! This was his last as an 85er. Can you say 94 is the new 85 for years to come? 🙂

You maybe right 🙂 But on the other hand: don’t you think they replaced it already?

I enjoyed the 85kgs but it felt like the wind was taken out of it when Zieliński started to show he wasn’t on form. The venue was full of Polish fans and they weren’t too bothered about how Markov, Okulov, Rybakou or Aoookad… Auhud… Apti performed, so that affected the atmosphere somewhat. As you said, it was Apti’s to lose from then on. Despite the overall quality of Markov and Okulov, I sort of felt he was that little bit out of reach for them. Apti didn’t seem nearly as nonchalant or sharp as he did at the Europeans, but great work nonetheless.

I saw Zieliński come out after his session, just at the start of the -75kgs and he looked so dejected. He was by the side of the stands looking forlorn, but loads of Polish fans came over to chat and take photos with him and he seemed to perk up a bit after that.

I cant help but smile, Andrei Rybakou is still the man in snatch, even beaten up like an old dog, One of the greatest snatchers of all time. People will appreciate him once his career is over. It still doesnt seem to get to them now: he beat the entire field in snatch (Aukhadov, Markov, Zielinski, everybody!). I enjoyed the 85 so much.

Vasiliy and Apti were also scheduled to come to Columbus on November 14th. I just got a follow up email that Apti was injured and isn’t making the seminar. I don’t have any idea if that applies to the Catalyst/Waxman seminar, nor do I know if the seminar is going on now with just Vasiliy. Just a heads up for anyone considering it.

Okulov snatched 180 (training hall) almost 2 years ago at 17. I think he’s the future of 85s. He looks to have a crisp jerk as well to go past 210+

It was the last time we saw Apti in 85 kg category. He’s moving up to 94.

In my opinion. Apti has some of the most convincing lifts of all weightlifters in my generation. So much confidence and aggressiveness in his catch. Reminds me of Pyrros. Thanks for the post!

How did Apti fail his 219 attempt? Clean or the Jerk?

The clean, he failed to rack it
