According to Polska Sztanga Lui’s 393@94 is a new Chinese total record.
Wally Broccoli says
Sad part is Lu Yong @85 did 394 in 08. Chinese in 94 are sad. Wished Lu Yong didn’t retire.
emk0414 says
me too.
Victor says
China’s 94s are so sad, only 1 guy beat Kendrick Farris’ 373kg… And that’s SAD.

The drawback of the Chinese heavyweights like Lu Yong or Yuan Aijun (85)/Cui Wenhua (105) before him is they’re complete outliers. If they’re injured or retiring then CHN is screwed in those categories. They get lucky with a talent but the depth isn’t there. Sure, they can place lifters like Tao/Bing/Yunan into the A finals but those almost never have a chance at a medal.
This situation is a complete reversal to the lightweights where names are almost meaningless to the medal count. Long Quingguan is kinda not in shape? Doesn’t matter, we have Wu Jingbiao. Zhang Jie is missing too many attempts? Who cares, we have Chen Lijun coming through. Liao Hui is banned? Pfft, we send Lin Qingfeng and win anyway. Liu Xiaojun is busy posing half-naked? Nah, just send Lu Haojie or Su Dajin instead. Etc. etc.
Victor says
I would literally rather send no one than send Su Dajin and watch him make 1 out of 6 lifts again LOL. But I think Yang Zhe has a great chance at podium this year. Heck, he may even win gold if Nurudinov comes down with food poisoning or something LOL
Eric Xu says
They don’t make us that size.
Didn’t lu yong have a series of pretty bad injuries that ultimately led to his retirement?
Ponz says
Well if I recall correctly he did have a lingering foot problem but it didn’t prevent him from competing. I DO know that he bombed out at the 2011 WWC and the 2012 OG, both of which he had seemed to have in the bag judging by his snatches. Someone else said that after a (poor – a good 20ish KG down from his old self) performance at 2013 Chinese Nationals he said he planned to retire. 🙁

Here’s that interview mentioning the fractured left foot:
https://allthingsgym.com/lu-yongs-road-london-2012/
In hindsight, it seems like a major mistake to postpone that surgery for the time being. If he had done it right after 2008 OG he’d very possibly still be in contention.
At the 2012 nationals he did 175+200, missing 205 twice.
At the 2013 nationals he bombed at his 165 opener. So it wasn’t just poor it was (again) without a result.

Any full version of 85kg yet? I think Tian Tao`s power jerk is really cool.

The 85 and 105+ weren’t shown on CCTV according to ATG twitter: https://twitter.com/GregorWin/status/459285609534599169
Real bummer, I like the CHN supers. 🙁
Roberto Rosario says
Anyone else surprised that Tian Tao’s total has gone DOWN after two years and gaining a weight class?
Victor says
Everybody is different. Some lifters like Lu Xiaojun, didn’t get good until he was 25 and others like Lu Yong are worn down by 25 and need to retire. Tian Tao probably peaked at way too young of an age (17 or so) and he’s already on his way down, or so it seems. There’s plenty of juniors who lifted tremendous weights, comparable to senior weights at junior competitions, but they won’t ever amount to anything as seniors.
guest says
See also: Taner Sagir, Andrei Aramnau, Simon Kolecki as JWR holders. Never matched those results as seniors.
guest says
Ai Yunan won the 105+ with 191+230, according to the highlights.
Zhang Guozheng at the medal ceremony. 🙂
anonymous says
If Lui Hao cuts down to the 85 class he would be in contention for a medal on the international stage. Thoughts?
Victor says
If he went down to 85, and he had to travel to lift, he might be doing more like 365 instead of 393.
John Schou says
What amazes me is how all these top Chinese lifters , appear to purposely look down while the weight is overhead in both lifts . So apparently this is taught there . Yet , we Americans are taught just the opposite , look up !
