Update 09.04.2014:
- Marcin Dolega in +105kg. One of the reasons he mentions in this video is that he hopes this change will help him avoid injuries. He’s optimistic, more relaxed, and hopes to do a 415 total. New chapter in life,Rio as coach? (Thanks to Michal for translating)

Wally Broccoli says
A lot of top Russians missing. No Lapikov, Murtatov, or Okulov and Aukhadov. Also wondering what happened to Aleksy Kosov and Khugatev.
Adam says
And will Chingiz ever lift again??
Mark says
Aukhadov isn’t doing competitions for another half a year, because he’s moving up to 94 kg weight class.
The Dude says
Aramnau is back!!! Hopefully he doesn’t pull out like he has the past few major comps.
Borislav says
It will be boring.
Stewart Jones says
perhaps
but im still looking forward to it
Dude Weightlifting says
I figured Муратов or Лапиков would be the other supers for Russia; not Албегов.
guest says
They’re both lagging behind Lovchev’s and Mogushkov’s totals.
Plenty of people seem to think Lapikov will take the snatch record the first time he gets a chance. That’s foolish, a training lift within the country is meaningless on an international platform.
Muratov has bad luck anyway, not competitive as a 105, not really enough height or mass for a super.
On the other hand, I’m slightly confused why they let Albegov burn through so many competitions. Six in the past two years is crazy already.
grobpote says
I was very disappointed about Lapikov last time. I totally agree with your opinion about the importance of the training lifts on platform(no importance at all). Of course it’s nice to see big training results on video. Lots of guys are absolutely crazy about Akkaev’s 210-245 before the olympics. He would have done about 200-202 in the snatch and 235-240 in the c&j at max.Still world record but sooo far from the training results…Seems they forget that he used straps for the snatch and it was under training circumstances. He could go as he wanted, without any pressure from the others and the olympic platform itself. Doesn’t matter how experienced you are, competition is another kind of animal. It goes for every lifter and as you can see,Lapikov didn’t snatch 215 or 220 and Okulov didn’t snatch 180 either. If we talking about weightlifting and the achievements, training doesn’t count. Competition does. And before I get the rebuke, I like these lifters and I think they are excelent ones.
WSyd says
Lapikov didn’t use straps for the 215 snatch. It was done in simulated meet conditions – no straps, three attempts, 205/210/215. Obviously it still was a lift within the country but it was a bit more than just a “training lift” as you guys are saying.
grobpote says
If he does it in major competition I’ll take my hat off for him.Don’t get me wrong it was terrific, but still just a backside somewhere and not a European or World platform. We enjoy it because we love weightlifting but I’d like to see it where it matters.
Easternhammer says
As a 105 Lapikov did a 201 snatch inside Russia, never more than 194 internationally. He loses a lot of kilos leaving home. I think 215@super translates into 205-207 at a world competition. Which is great for sure but I think there are 5 guys who could do that and more.
dont be scared homie says
muratov, just like klokov said about himself, was made for 110…at the president’s cup he was at 113 i think
guest says
Above ~185cm you almost have to become a super to be competitive in the A group and not everyone wants to get fat to get a good c&j.
94 to 105 is 11 and keeping with those intervals quickly reaches into diminishing returns. My hunch is that a 115-120kg cat would be too close to the supers to justify. For example, Chigichev did 207.5 @ 113.
grobpote says
I think a 115-116 kg category between 105 and +105 would be nice.I always thought 105 kg is too small for heavyweight.
Cal says
Love your work man! Milllkooooo!
grobpote says
I’m looking forward to see Peter Nagy from Hungary. He’s a nice guy and he might just get close to win a medal.
Justman says
Where’s Clarence? Is he still lifting?
dfvdzfvz says
Knee injury last I heard
Easternhammer says
Without Hristov, what’s the reason to watch the first few days? The weakness of Europe in the lightweights is unfortunate. Although I am interested to see Tigran Martirosyan in the 77s, he’s been missing for years.
Adam says
Oleg Chen??
Ivan Bista says
The reason to watch is weightlifting. At least for me.
Easternhammer says
Don’t get me wrong-I’ll be watching too, and I hope for a good competition. But when the 56kg title is won with something like 265 total, well…it’s hard not to think “The Chinese have 10 guys who could do that.” Which is not intended to diminish the efforts of current European lightweights, but only to reflect on the imbalance in weight classes which exists today.
Ivan Bista says
Yeah I get what you re saying, still though, cant get enough of weightlifting, its not like its football and you can watch high class comp daily. At least it may be a tight race since noone is really a class of his own in Europe.
Vincent says
Tom Goegebeur competing on his 16th EC, 39 y/o.
grobpote says
Indestructible is the right word for him 🙂
WSyd says
So what are the odds that Aramnau actually shows up?
SRWG says
If Aramnau shows up and Dolega manages to total, I’ll eat my shoe
WSyd says
I’ll join you with that.
Gregor says
Aramnau was spotted in the training hall…
SRWG says
Your move, Andrei
Juan says
I hope you have chosen your sauce…chances of shoe eating activities have suddenly increased 😉
SRWG says
Is 184/212 from Andrei really count as showing up? 40kg off his olympic total (200/236), 30kg off his BLR-nationals total (201/225)…sure it was good enough for a bronze, but I’m surely not alone in feeling like he was a real disappointment
Deepblue says
agree! really disappointment!. Really pissed me off the way he hurry before jerk, he is a bounce jerker and now he got caught by the judges :(.
Anyway you must eat your shoe! 😀
Guest says
Well it’s not a rule, just bad judging.
ShoeEAt says
You were implying that showing up was joining the competition. He did, and oh yeah. Dolega posted a total.
grobpote says
You are not alone. He was a disappointment and I’m not sure he’s ever gonna be the same again.I really considered him as the most talented lifter in the 105 kg cat and I still think he is.On the other hand he is a classic example who proves that talent is just a part of success. It would be great to see him in form again!
guest says
I don’t know what people were expecting? Four years off the international scene, plus his last performance at 2010 EWC was also “just” 195/225. The 184 didn’t look like his current limit and he also had the 220 c&j, but the prior judging affected his technique.
He always holds his breath throughout the c&j hence he cannot keep the bar on his shoulders too long after the clean. We saw what happens when he is forced to.
If you look at his c&j from 2007 WWC, 2008 OG and 2010 EWC he always c&j in the same manner and was never denied the lift for it. Even for the failed 212 the centre referee was fine with it. If he had been called for it from the onset he likely wouldn’t have kept this technique.
Plus the oscillation rule as I understood it in the past refers to deliberate “mini dips”, i.e. what Liao Hui does. Aramnau on the other hand stands completely still after the clean but doesn’t wait until the bar is motionless. The top of his cleans look (much) more forceful compared to others, i.e. he doesn’t slow down at the end.
lalalaguesat says
Exactly this. Judging was not on form this comp.
guest says
He was on several preliminary start lists in 2012/2013 and probably before that as well. I doubt we will ever see him again outside of Belarus.
I’m inclined to blame those above in the foodchain for wasting his talent, but let’s not forget his alcohol and weed escapades.
He could’ve become a 205/240+@105 lifter. So much drama.
Borislav says
And btw, finally we will see some medals for Bulgaria again. You heard it here first!
Ivan Bista says
We actually saw bulgarian medals in 2013 Euros and Worlds, but yeah, I share your excitement especially for Markov. My man Rybakou is in the decline of his career and I find it more and more satisfying to watch Markov lifting, my new favorite lifter in the 85. Looking forward what he can achieve especially if Aukhadov and Zielinski moved to 94 for good. Not forgetting about Okulov, should be a great class even if it lost some top lifters to 94.
Kral Santos says
I don’t know what do you think, this is the best squad of Turkey in recent years.
Covero says
Another good stream (in german):
http://www.yourtv.to/online/live/fernsehen/stream/eurosport.html
guest says
Is there a Eurosport 2 stream in German? For the live 75+ women on saturday.
guest says
Does the EasyWL stream for the B groups work for anyone? All I’m getting is “offline” yesterday as well as today.
joshie says
bring back David Goldstrum & David Morgan, these commentators are awful
guest says
I watched some of the British replays and yes the male commentator clearly has little knowledge about WL in general. I actually remember him from some of the 2007 WWC videos on Frank Rothwell’s channel. Awful.
Perhaps some of the producers think Goldstrom is too old by now? Afaik he’s doing it for 20+ years. He wasn’t hired by Eurosport (or BBC) for London either. They really underestimate how a knowledgeable commentator can enhance a broadcast.
Borislav says
Can someone please tell me the names of the new comentators? I can’t find them on the internet…
guest says
Since monday (69k) it’s Colin Bryce and Michaela Breeze, the latter being a former lifter herself so she at least knows what she’s talking about. The first two days they had another guy plus MB. He’s the one I mentioned above, you can also hear him with e.g. Rybakov’s 2007 WR snatch. I don’t know his name either, but he’s terrible.
For the OG they had yet another older gentleman in some of the classes and he’s not too in depth either.
These two don’t know a power from a squat jerk and never recognize lifters turned coaches like Ivanov or Gotfrid. I could come up with more background stuff than those.
namenamename says
You’d hope that, but she didn’t know the rules at all, misinforming the whole viewership. At least it wasn’t as bad as the london olympics. I hope Goldstrom comes back with maybe Morgan. Listening to the recent podcast gregor posted of him he sounds up for most gigs!
Marc Huster & co, top troller commentators EU though.
Borislav says
I find Huster aweful. Too arogant and talks too much. Michaela Breeze is cool though.
GHM says
Check out this Youtube link each day for updated videos.

Gregor says
Thanks I already linked to it in the “Recordings” table
Jouni says
Are there any streams for the B groups?
Gregor says
Unfortunately no
Stathis says
Men’s 85B, Martasidis 1st place from what i saw. Gold medal for Greece since years!
Stathis says
Edit: Mistake, not the first gold since years, he also won in 2012.
Bona says
You realize the 85’s haven’t even lifted yet right? That was the B group.
Stathis says
Yeah you are right, in the evening it will be the A group and the results will be determined from there.
guest says
Impressive lifting so far from O. Chen with an injured knee/pain, reminiscent of Lu H. @ London 2012.
I. Markov’s 385 at not-so-important European’s is world class, especially given the lack of serious competition. He could’ve won 2012 (on bw) and 2004 OG with that total. Also @ 85 nice to see B. Hennequin back with a strong c&j.
T. Martirosyan was further behind than expected. I guess Armenia had to “draw back” after last year’s suspensions.
What else… A, Coban’s 114 c&j went perfect, 10kg at that bw demands respect. Grats to Z. Smith for her first senior medal. Btw, what happened to J. Rohde, wasn’t she listed initially @ 53 A final?
Big lol @ Syrtsov yelling at the jury from the stands for almost screwing over R. Unanyan.
Also lol @ Huster quoting Aukhadov/Klokov through ATG. I guess the channel’s lawyers wouldn’t approve a direct mention given the links. 😀
[lastly… I noticed her two years ago afair but P. Piechowiak is incredibly attractive, especially in those suits… golly!]
Ivan Bista says
I would add Karol Samko to the very nice and entertaining 85 session and his big fight (and a nice 5th place in cnj), after missing both 185 and 186 to save himself like that with 192kg, respect. Especially given this was his first comp after a 2yr suspension.
I second with the grats to Zoe Smith and agree with your Piechowiak view :D. My nominee is russian 58 Maria Lubina 🙂 but there were certainly more attractive girls as always in several categories.
grobpote says
Don’t forget my countryman János Baranyai who came back from injury and did six out of six – fighting with the last one like a lion 🙂
I think Markov showed his superiority and will be very hard to beat this year if everything goes well for him.
Zoe Smith did well but I can’t keep wondering how would her technique look like if she was taught by for example a russian coach..
It’s great to see that Slovakia – after years of struggling – has a squad.Well done!
Ivan Bista says
Agree, although not so deep manned, the 85 didnt disappoint, and not only thanks to the medallists. I also liked Zwarycz with his fearless attempt, always liked him for his approach.
mrtn says
haha, nice atg-promo on german eurosport 😀
Mr_Rogers413 says
Missed that, what did they have to say?
mrtn says
they mentioned that you will find news and impressive trainingvids on atg, they also get most of their informations from there and gave probs to the person in charge. and they announced to link atg on their facebook-site (“eurosport gewichtheben”).
ShaunL says
The Russian streaming page is the only page that isn’t completely shady. I am glad at least one is ok 🙂
GHM says
Breathing pipe protection for weightlifters
I have seen too many weightlifters black out after clean. We must demand protection for them such as better training technique or a device.
I suggest allowing front shoulder and neck protection similar to ones that people who were in accidents wear to reduce pressure of head over their neck. Weightlifting one should be flexible and voluntary. I suggest start with youth program. Just something to think about.
anon says
Random question…but does anybody know any of the songs they played here? There’s one song I heard while watching one of the women’s competitions (don’t remember which one) and I’m trying to find it but can’t…I’ve heard it around so it must be pretty well known and current but I have no idea wtf it’s called.
anon says
the one i’m thinking of was very electronic/dubstep-ish… I’m not being very specific with those terms because I don’t exactly know how people categorize them but it was one of those songs that’s just kind of like…noise….it was good though.
anon says
ok so it’s at around 16:10 in the women’s 75kg clean and jerk… anybody know?
