08.07.2015: Here is the 30 minute training hall video of the Chinese team.
This was filmed on 05.06.2015 which was their first day in the training hall. There is still plenty more footage from the other days.
09.07.2015: Warm up area during the 77kg.
Jawad Mohammed Karrar (Iraq) hit 140+ for like 10 attempts back there. Bummer his head wasn’t there when he went on stage to open with 148kg.
07.07.2015: another teaser for the 30 min training hall video.
Zhou Jun (58kg, China) doing Rounded Back Deadlifts.
A legit exercise to strengthen the spinal erectors when used with caution and appropriate weight (don’t be stupid!). I think in gymnastics they call it a Jefferson Curl, google it.
Update: Reader Roy Aldo sent in this information about the exercise.
This rounded back deadlift was first used by the great Tommy Kono, USA. In his book, Weightlifting, Olympic Style, 2001, Tommy ends with chapter 12, entitled “The Loosening Deadlift“.
The weight used by the lifter is not important. It should be very light. Generally, after a heavy workout a lifter should do these to decompress the spine, stretch the hamstrings and for overall lumbar muscle tone.
Finally,Tommy recommended 8-12 reps for 1 to 2 sets and he stressed that the movement be done slowly and smoothly as Zhou Jun demonstrated in the video above.
In your video you notice that the training partner of Zhou attempts to coach her in exactly what to do. Note that at the beginning of the movement he emphasizes that her neck be the first part of the body allignment to bend forward. This is exactly how Tommy Kono taught it in his book.
I suspect that since the Chinese do a lot of research that they would probably acknowledge that they imported
great Tommy Kono. He certainly deserves the praise.

w48: Jiang Huihua YOG champ, who just did 95+113. I see a new snatch YWR coming. Hou I don’t know just by name atm. Interesting that Russia has entries for both 48+53, unusual for them.
w53: Liu Quan did 98+118 recently, should win easily. Only other name I know is Koha/LAT.
w58: Zhou Jun is the one that bombed in London at 53. She did 105+135 in the Nationals, so this is a low entry. Srisurat/THA also low, she won bronze last year in Almaty with 231.
w63: Wei Lufan is curious, she was only 13th in the nationals with 97+129. Expected Zhang Wangli here. Likhacheva’s entry’s again low, she has lifted much more already. Also every Vietnamese lifter has to be named Nguyen. :O
w69: Wang Jie did 111+145, on paper has the advantage. Ahmed much younger and wasn’t full 69 previously. Are the young Sara, Esraa and Heba sisters? Dunno.
w75: Don’t know nothing. w75+ will be Lysenko’s. Chaidee probably another strong Thai SHW for the future.
m56: Scarantino competes a lot, 270 is also high entry for him. Meng wins with 280+.
m62: Pak is YOG champ, but not with a large total.
m69: Yarkin’s also of note. Yuan did 148+182 as best Junior in the Nationals.
m77: Karapetyan wins easily. Surprised to see no entries for 62+77 from CHN. Expected Caoshi Jiaqi here.
m85: Zhao is good for 360, don’t know much about Avetisyan.
m94: Surprised to see Khugaev, would’ve guessed he goes directly to the WWC instead.
m105: Guydya should win easily with his C&J. Wu is a tall buff guy good for 170+210.
m105+: Savchuk wins due to C&J. Martirosyan doesn’t want to get beaten again by Guydya it seems. 😛 He did his C&J YWR at 111kg, so maybe he loses quite a but cutting to 105? Will be interesting.
Gregor says
Very nice analysis. Totally missed Yarkin in there!
About Sara and Esra from Egypt… I asked and was told they are not sisters.
Victor says
It’s amazing that Zhou Jun, 3 years after lifting in London, is still a Junior! That means she was selected to lift at an Olympic games as a youth! China usually only sends quite seasoned lifters, even over-thier-prime lifters to the OG rather than sending young, inexperienced ones. At first, I thought it was a different Zhou Jun, but now, I see it is the same.
Gregor says
What??? that’s crazy
wlift84 says
Three years later and it’s still totally baffling. Although she’s obviously super talented (snatched 93@53 aged 14) she wasn’t ready then. She didn’t lift in the trials, only the AWC but already as a full 58. Then in London as 53 she was asked to open at her best 58 snatch of 95kg. I don’t know if her misses are blocked by the IOC on YT, but it’s on CCTV.
Corruption? Who knows. Ji Jing who lifted 230 in the trials (enough to beat Chinshanlo) got screwed out of an Olympic medal big time.
George says
m69 could be an unreal competition, although at the same time If there’s any chance of a blow out win I think it would be Luis unless the others make some big clean and jerk gains. Even with 150/186 he blows the others away and he JUST moved up…would be cool to see yarkin do well with that janky technique.
Ericson Jericho D. Pacaba says
Hyped for Jiang Huihua domination.
wlift84 says
Hypetrain entirely justified.
Ericson Jericho D. Pacaba says
The way she drops the bar though. As per the above comment, I don’t know if that’s legal or not but it’s certainly badass.
Edison Arias says
No Dominican Republic… Sad for me, in almalty we get 5th place in w48. I will enjoy competition, this year looks like some records are going up.
Leviathar says
How tall i Martirosyan and Guydya?
wlift84 says
This isn’t a proper answer, but they look normal height for their class, 180-185cm.
Leviathar says
Thanks for the answer anyway, yes 180-185 looks about right
wlift84 says
Records: almost all are safe.
W48: A week ago I would have said the snatch YWR going is at 99% (and maybe even the JWR getting an attempt), but Jiang’s 180 entry is final. At the nationals it was 200, but of course the competition there was much harder. 80-85-89? Hopefully it’s just a bluff.
M69: I think Mosquera can get to a 191 C&J eventually, although not necessarily as Junior. But this time already? Not convinced.
The rest of the elite lifters would need signifcant increases to touch Junior WRs. M94 Khugaev will probably snatch 186 as a Junior but not now, his entry implies a peak for the EWC. M105 Guydya has a crazy C&J but Aramnau was in another league. M56 Meng needs more time towards a 290 IWF total and Thach just increased the records by 3/4kg. W53 Liu and W63 Wei are sort of in the neighborhood for snatch/C&J JWR respectively, but would still need big increases for their bw (98 vs 102 / 129 vs 136).
Joel Leonard says
Boady Santavy will snatch 150, clean and jerk 180. Pretty good for someone who generally trains 3-5x/week and is tested at least 3x a year by an independent body. If you get a chance, ask him about his favorite kind of banana. They are his training secret. Dont sleep on him!
Joel Leonard says
As an 85

Seems to be an issue with the sound..
wlift84 says
someone forgot to plug in the cords or something.
grobpote says
The scoreboard says Youth World Championships. One guy starts at 129 kg in the snatch in the 56 cat. Haaaa! I know it’s junior of course but it’s still very impressive!
wlift84 says
These numbers have to be left overs. The weigh in just started at 15:00. Meng won’t open with a 134 C&J e.g.
David Oliveira says
Very good -48kg competition. Jiang Huihua was hyped, but her teammate was almost equally good. Impressing the fact that Jiang’s 205kg total equals Wang Mingjuan 2012 Olympic gold medal performance, and is better than Tan Yayun’s 2013 and 2014 WWC marks.
wlift84 says
The WWC/OG comps she couldn’t have won with that total (assuming she’s the CHN lifter): 2004, 2009, 2010.
The level of internal competition (in various categories) within China is almost incomprehensible.
Victor says
Jiang HuiHua needs to be careful how she drops the barbell. I’m surprised her coaches didn’t reprimand her because that’s technically grounds to disqualify the lift. I remember Thach Tuan Kim had received one red light for such an offense, I believe, in Incheon. It’d be a big shame if she had a WR lift disqualified for dropping the bar like that.
David Oliveira says
Thought the same when I saw the lift. Zhapparkul (KAZ, -69kg) was also red lighted last year at Almaty for dropping the barbell like that, and in that case it probably cost her the world title.
Mr_Rogers413 says
That lift by Clarence Cummings was just absurd. Nothing like a 15 year old throwing around a weight you can barely rep for DL. Crazy close to the YWR and 4kg off of the American Senior record.
Arizona77kg says
CJ Cummings looked like he had enough gas in the tank to get 174. He’ll get the record soon. Quite a differential from the snatch.
What happened to Iarkin or Yarkin? Injured? Just an off day?
Kyle Roach says
His first clean and jerk looked like he ran out of oxygen for the jerk and kind of fell out of the attempt and looked like he might’ve been close to passing out. He had to recover from that and follow himself and he seemed to hold his elbow after missing the second jerk. I didn’t see the snatch session but for all 3 clean and jerk looked like he was having an off day
wlift84 says
The nice streaming people have put up all sessions up now, so I just rewatched his attempts. His first snatch looked ok, 2+3 were only slightly off with regards to overpulling and height. In the C&J however it looks like he keeps his breath throughout the entire lift causing him to go lightheaded. In both attempts he also catches the bar a bit out of position and had to adjust at the bottom, causing extra strain. In the first he looked simply out of gas for the jerk, in the second he attempted to balance the squat jerk but wasn’t able to. His left elbow seems to have suffered, but at least it didn’t look serious.
Gregor says
He also seemed to have injured his elbow.
mrtn86 says
cummings seems to have an absolutely outstanding athletic talent. i think his technique doesnt look ideal, still he is getting in these big numbers. really impressive..
Magneto says
Indeed he has! Where do you think he can improve his technique? I think he has outstanding strength, but can get more efficient still. I haven’t seen his snatches but he is jumping back in the clean which causes some instabilites in the receiving position imo. It’s obivious that he can clean more weight.
mrtn86 says
in my opinion his hips are quite high in starting position (in both lifts), so as a result his back is nearly parallel to the floor, which can be critically in connection with a vertical bar path. indeed he has to jump back significantly. i know there are other athletes doing so, but his relatively weak results in the more technical lift (his snatch was only 73% of his c&j, 80-85% are common) make me think this is not the best technique for him.
would love to see him as chinese or russian weightlifter..
(in before “you lift less, dont talk about his technique”)
Magneto says
The snatch/clean&jerk ratio is a pretty reliable indicator (even on amateur level). I think your analysis is on point 🙂 Only few lifters can make such a pulling technique work. Dolega and Vanev come to mind, although I fear that some of Dolegas misses were directly related to the bar path.
I agree with wlift84 however – the weights are not heavy enough to put his technique to the test. When they get heavier, the struggle to stabilize a bar with backward momentum in a deep squat gets tougher, too. He catches them relatively high where it’s easier to maintain control over horizontal movement.
wlift84 says
You can watch his snatches now on the ustream site. The obvious flaw is that he jumps back yes, but worse to me is the asymmetry of it since he does it more on his right side. He’s always at an angle catching, and it’s more pronounced for the snatch receiving position.
His strength reserve is big, it looks he could do 140 now without compensating for this.
Ericson Jericho D. Pacaba says
I don’t really watch American lifters too much but the compactness of Clarence’s split looks like what Kendrick Farris used to do. Is that kind of jerk split taught on purpose for certain lifters?
Magneto says
His rear leg is more bent than average but overall his receiving stance is spot on imo. He can get deep, he is stable and the bar is locked nicely behind his head. There are some other top lifters whose rear knee is almost touching the platform. No problem if you were taught this way and feel comfortable. If Clarence was taught like that or figured it out for himself – I dunno. I’m more astonished by the fact that he jumps back in the jerk apparently, which I haven’t seen before by any lifter.
David Oliveira says
Luis Mosquera outperformed all the 77’s! Funny too that I just noticed that the Junior C&J WR in the Women’s 58 class is higher than the 63’s (139kg vs 136).
wlift84 says
The 105 Junior snatch by Dolega was also higher than the SHW for like 6 years.
Arizona77Kg says
KK looked off his game, of course his B game is enough to win at the Jr’s. Its to be expected so soon after the Europeans. Pity he got timed out on that last snatch, but I wasn’t sure he’d get it. He was rotating to his left side which I think he tends to do but it was exaggerated today. He is lucky that poor guy from Ukraine is using the lame power/squat jerk or it might have been close on the total given his form today.
Im a big fan and I was sort of hoping he’d take a crack at Akaaev’s snatch record but knew it wouldn’t happen based on his posted starting lift.
wlift84 says
Disappointing lifting by Zhou Jun, thought she would be at 230 here. Every other Chinese did as expected/enough to win. Her bodytype however is ridiculous, like Kostova.
Victor says
Holy smokes!! Wu gave Guidea the slip twice! I did not see that coming at all! Guidea looked fast and strong, (though a little technically awkward) while Wu looked mundane. Completely unexpected for Guidea to botch his last clean and jerk, handing all 3 golds to Wu!
wlift84 says
Yes, that was a great little duel and proof you don’t need Ilyin type weights for some excitement. Of course Guidea is capable of 400+ but if he misses, he loses.
grobpote says
Both Guidea and Khugaev were absolutely disappointing. I don’t care how old they are and how big training videos they post I just want to see nice lifts. I didn’t see any neither yesterday nor today. It’s even a bigger shame for Guidea that he posts 233 and can’t do 213 when it matters. Both Aukhadov and Maligov (and so on) were much more focused lifters in their junior years. I appreciate what Khugaev did at the Europeans but here he was all over the place both technically and in head too. Embarrassed smiles? Come on!
Artur09 says
Khugaev at the European Championships had a peak form, and keep it another 2 months would be pointless and even dangerous.
grobpote says
That’s just fine.I didn’t expect records just plain focused nice lifting. Savchuk produced it for me 🙂
Ericson Jericho D. Pacaba says
I agree (at least with Guidea). And Martirosyan bombing is a sad event but he did compete not too long ago. He has to have some off days sometimes. I just find it hilarious that they go all mindgames with the IG posts then fall flat during competition itself. They have good things coming in the future though.
David Oliveira says
To me it seemed that the Russians underestimated their competition. To be fair I never expected Khugaev to perform as good as he did in the Europeans, but Guidea has no excuse.
Arizona77Kg says
Guidea hit the 211 fairly easily. I figured 213 wouldn’t even feel different to him. I know power jerking is supposed to be more efficient but some of the guys don’t look too confident with it. I believe someone in the 62’s or 69’s failed his first two power jerks and finally split on the third attempt and got it, even though he was gassed from the first two tries and minimal rest.
wlift84 says
Lysenko dislocates her elbow and Martirosyan zero good lifts. Great day. :/ At least Nogay and Savchuk lifted proper.
Phil says
Yeah that’s never nice to see, same with the 85kg(?) class where there were a lot of people fainting.
I was pretty surprised at simon’s weigh in, I though he might be a bit heavier than that or trying to put on weight. I wonder if he’s going back to 105 or what the reason for not cutting was, maybe because he’s been in quite a few competitions in the last year?
Savchuk was a beast, nice to see him trying to push out of his comfort zone.
Looks like Luis and Jiang will get the best lifter awards.
wlift84 says
Savchuk’s 238 attempt was for the Russian Junior record, for anyone curious. Currently 237 by Abuev.
grobpote says
I was,thanks!
Phil says
I didn’t know, cheers. BTW Abuev has now been sanctioned by RUSADA,
http://www.rusada.ru/en/press/news/russian-athlete-weightlifting-recognized-ineligible-0
lifter says
Dam that 238 was super close, beast.
wlift84 says
I like the medal table from the results book. China got only places 1 and 2, among snatch, C&J and total, nothing else. They did better with 4 men than Russia with 8. I know Russia had bad luck with injury and bombs, but China could’ve also entered four more lifters.
Shit’s crazy.
Victor says
Well, if they entered 4 more, they probably won’t all be gold/silver finishes then LOL.
Jerker Karlsson says
Looking at the vidoe of Mohammed Jawad Karrar, he seems to get up on the forefoot/toes on his clean pulls and the start of his cleans. Does anybody know if this is intentional to give him some advantage, or is it just a quirk in his lifting?
Matthew Sachs says
I think it would be worthy of discussion to spot pull point above the knee and the use of arms and back. The majority hit the pull line at the hips but Dmitry Berestov hits the mid thigh (old school Vardanian) line to extend. Such a beautiful style! All hamstring and back with relaxed arms.
Oscar says
Love the rounded-back deadlifts. The only bad thing about that exercise is the 8 people who will come up to you in the gym and tell you you’re deadlifting wrong.
Sanjay says
Really cute the girl doing rounded back deadlifts.
Ericson Jericho D. Pacaba says
Man, really bummed for Jawad Mohammed Karrar. Maybe he was training too heavy leading up to competition day and up until the warm-ups?
wlift84 says
China and Stanozolol, this is unexpected.
Ericson Jericho D. Pacaba says
So just how young can lifters start doping?
Name says
Is there also a longer video of Team Argentina?
Sanjay says
Looking at Yuan Chengfei (69 kg) doing squat jerks, I am starting to feel increasingly disappointed about the Chinese team’s growing use of the squat jerk.
It is unreliable, it is taking a big risk for lifting maybe 10 kg more, and it will not break any of the records set before 1988. It is typical to see a Chinese squat jerker make 2 misses before succeeding in his squat jerk, and I find it such a waste.
I understand weightlifting is a spectacle, and it is entertaining for us as the viewers to see the occasional squat jerker and splot jerker in competition, especially since it shows a different personality of a different lifter. But the Taranenko did the 267.5 kg jerk with a traditional Soviet scissor style split jerk, and Angel Guenchev did his triple body weight jerk with the traditional jerk style as well. We want to see new records broken and new limits reached, and it won’t be done with this unorthodox method.
Gregor says
I bet people said the same thing back when the first athletes switched from split snatch to squat snatch.
Sanjay says
True, who knows, the squat jerk could be the way of the future, and its current unreliability is just a sign of the technique not having been fully mastered yet.
Still, a squat jerker often has to duck back down after catching the weight just to stabilize it, and then bounce 2-3 times before coming back. Often with over 200+ kg. This is a lot of effort and energy to stabilize a heavy weight even after catching it. People do not do that with squat snatches.
wlift84 says
I don’t think you can even name 10 Chinese squat jerkers and basically you have no idea what you’re talking about. “Typical?” Nice statistical analysis.
The ONLY reason 80s records are unsurpassed is because of drug testing. Go ask Kurlovitch. There was no mandatory test for setting a record until mid-1989. The Russians can’t beat them either and most of them split. Please shut up about 80s records. They are in no way shape or form relevant.
