Here’s a recent news segment with team astana. If you find any more footage of this event please to post them in the comments! More updates to come…
wat says
pff, 240 kg, not even world record.
wlift84 says
Kydyrbayev 188+230, Uteshov 180+230 (made a mistake called him Sedov while submitting).
Goricheva and Zhapparkul are also above their normal 63/69 categories. 120 snatch is above and 261 total equal to the 63 WR.
Lifter says
Side news about a Kazak lifter Ms. Faina Sivanbayeva (KAZ) has returned an Adverse Analytical Finding for (S1.1 Anabolic Agents) dehydrochloromethyltestosterone. She already tested positive before.

Then she is in big truble! agen, got busted for Stanozolol last time back in 2012 and just got back agen 11.11.14.
Alex Moss says
Ilya’s C&J was looking solid, looks like he has 245 in him. The snatch was shakey though.
Ussr says
Wonder what happened to sedov? Anyone?
wlift84 says
http://wfrk.kz more results in Kazhak if you click through the topics. Another name would be Arli Chontey (62, usually 56) 130/164/294.
The SHW winner is indeed Selimkhan Abubakarov, but the second is not Kaplin. Alexander something going from the audio. Maybe it’s Zaichikov coming back, can’t quite tell.
Phil says
Judging by the TV spot it is Zaichikov, since he was in Astana’s gym. Wasn’t sure if it was him because there’s another lifter in the 105kg class who has a similar build, maybe that was bersanov.
I wonder if Alexsandr is the new 105kg.
Phil says
Alexsandr new 105kg confirmed.

Roberto says
Ilya pretends to lift 250 to equal Botev and Zakharevich.
David Oliveira says
Ahah, Ilya’s excuse to miss Houston is so BS. Doesn’t want to peak this year, but jerks 240. Seems legit.
Magneto says
I think he doesn’t want to go all out before Rio again (being pushed by Nurudinov and Bedzhanyan) and the fact that this 240 c&j qualifies as “not going all out” is quite frightening. That he keeps himself in competition shape is due to him participating in the Presidents Cup (necessary qualification).
lifter123 says
Peaking is not the same as lifting a heavy weight. 240 might be routine for him right now, we don’t know the full story.
Travel and competition prep for Worlds might take away from his Rio timeline. He’s pretty good about coming up with a plan and following it. Look at the strain last Worlds put on him, he damn near broke his arm trying to win it. Who knows what Worlds this year will be like. I think for him he’d rather sit back and watch and then push it when it truly matters.
Mitch Kuchenberg says
This. He has a /perfect/ record of winning gold at every international competition he’s ever competed in. He’s not going to risk losing the opportunity to put a capstone on his career winning gold at Rio to win a world championship in a weight class he’s already taken gold in. He’s all eyes on Rio 2016 right now.
David Oliveira says
240kg is routine? That’s quite scary if true!
I don’t think that competition preparation would harm is Rio chances. The guy just did a 431kg total, that probably only Nurudinov can match. My theory (that of course can be wrong) is that Ilya simply wants to be out of the headlights and avoid a duel with Nurudinov and Bedzhanyan before Rio.
wlift84 says
Also interesting that Chinshanlo didn’t lift and isn’t on the world team. She has her two required Olympic comps though.
Leon says
I believe 191 is a big improvement for him. Yes, a bit out of position, but still. If he gets his snatch up a little more, it will be almost impossible to beat him. Cleaning 240 looked very efficient and the jerk was solid.
About the reasons for him not going to world’s we can only speculate. Lifting in his home country is of course much less stress than travelling around the globe. On the other side it is bad for weightlifting when the top lifters only lift once every two years. Many lifters are more often injured than not. I still think this is a debate worth having although I do not claim to have enough knowledge to know the answer. However, it is obvious that we have quite an epidemic of injuries not just in weightlifting but pretty much in all sports.
Ilyin seems to be very smart about his training. So probably seeing him competing less often might be the price for us as the audience to pay, but it might give him a long carreer. Who knows, maybe he can win a fourth olympic medal? Depending on the level in the weightclass he could even go down again to 94s.
Den says
Ilyin won every international competition he participated in. Of course, he wants to continue like that, so if he went to Houston he would have had to lift another world record to win. Such hard work is not what he nedds just before Olympics.
Jerker Karlsson says
It’s going to be interesting to see if the planned total of 240+ kg will be realized at the Olympics. If Ilyin delivers according to his plans (which he has done in the past) and Nurudinov keeps improving, a real showdown could take place.
Phil says
191/240 on a regular day….maybe one of the foreigners or Ricky can update us with the condition of Ruslan Nurudinov. Saw they were with the Uzbekistan team. My money is still on the underdog for the upset 🙂
Roberto says
North Korea and Uzbekistan team don’t use youtube. And to tell you the truth, if I am coach of a team like Kaza, I would not allow lifters use youtube also.
Phil says
Ovcoarse I agree. All the noise should be made out on platform. All I was looking for was a condition update from the westerners who got to train with the Uzbek team. Last time we were able to find out that Nurudinov had been injured leading upto the WWC and did not expect to perform. I hope he has been doing more secret training in Bulgaria and does a 435+ total to send a message.
Roberto says
And Nuridinov is my my guess for the gold in Rio, he has a better snatch than Ilya and Bedzhanyan.
SirJohn says
Just a little thing I noticed: first time I see Ilyin doing a ‘textbook’ recovery in the jerk, i.e. bringing the front foot back first and it looks soooo much more solid than his 242 WR last year as well as his 250 jerk from rack
Wally Broccoli says
Abubakarov’s 200 looked scarily good. He might take a crack at junior WRs in 2016.
wlift84 says
He did 420 nationally last year and then 385 at the WWC…
I’m going to be the asshole and say that several of these results just show that Kazhakstan needs some more IWF oversight. Ulanov 397 total and he will be the 85 entry!? Zaichikov 428 and he will be the 105? These are absurd results for “completely unknown in this category”. Their recorded bests are 350 and 385 respectively. Aborneva’s IWF total is 264 and suddenly a 295. Goricheva’s and Chontey’s results are also far above their usual selves.
Yes, you can say that’s just part of the game. But it’s not equal around the globe. When Bedzhanyan did 240 at home he followed with 238 internationally. And when he did 240 internationally he followed with 242 at home. Albegov can do 260 at home but also 255 IWF. Tsarukayeva’s Russian snatch record is 1kg over her WR etc. pp. That is not the same pattern as above. Similarly, Liao Hui, Lu Xiaojun, Kang Yue or Zhou Lulu don’t have national records +10kg over their world bests. I can recognize PEDs being ubiquitous in elite sports, but I’m still not a fan of what’s happening here.
Jerker Karlsson says
I agree with you that the difference in results between national and international meets for many of their lifters seems suspicious. But there are also many lifters from Kazakhstan that deliver world-class results internationally and do not show the discrepancy you mention. There is Ilyin, Sedov, Kydyrbaev, Chinsanlo, Pavlov, and maybe some others I forget. These athletes definitely deliver quality results internationally, although not all of them are champions.
Any idea of what separates the ones that have the big difference between local and international results, and the ones who do not?
wlift84 says
I’d say there are at least two, one more speculative and one with some data.
The first is that there are two camps, Astana now being a team and not just Ilyin. When Kydyrbayev or Sedov weren’t a part of it they’re were suspended as well. I don’t have an overview as to who of the lesser known lifters is with Astana, and since when, but as far as I can tell nobody has been banned of those since joining (corrections welcome). Now, realistically speaking we don’t really know what they can do different. Perhaps they’re more cautious, have better drugs or political influence. I don’t know and I wouldn’t bet on something specifically.
The more obvious reason I would ascribe these glaring discrepancies to is being or not being in the IWF international testing pool, i.e. having a reasonable expectation of a/multiple OOC test(s) or not.
If we compare previous bests with totals lifted here, we can find:
Chontey 274 294
Kharki 306 307 (306 was DSQ)
Ulanov 350 397 (over WR)
Zaichikov 385 428
Goricheva 247 261 (equal WR)
Aborneva 264 295
Nogay 275 300
None of these lifters are on that testing list. Ilyin and Kydyrbayev are. Interestingly they weren’t last year and made big comp bests. To me it’s not about a specific lifter.
With all that said, I don’t think it’s only *one* reason but a combination and not necessarily the same in each case. A young person can still naturally progress in a way Ilyin can’t anymore.
And finally, I don’t think most of these totals will get repeated equally at the WWC.
Jerker Karlsson says
Thanks for the info. I didn’t know there was a “testing pool”. I thought all competitors faced the same risk of being randomly tested.
We’ll see what the Kazakh athletes lift in Houston.
wlift84 says
Just for clarification: lifters not on the (IRTP) list still get tested OOC, but they’re not the priority. This is for 2015 and the general criteria, basically a high ranking the previous year (p. 105):
http://www.iwf.net/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2015/04/new-IRTP_24042015.pdf
http://www.iwf.net/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2015/04/001_105_Antidoping-imprim.pdf
An example from the past: Ashot Beghazyan from Armenia was suspended from an OOC test on 28-02-2013. He was not on the IRTP list that year, however other Armenians like Simon Martirosyan were. If we compare this date with the testing statistics we can see that several Armenian lifters were tested on 27/28-02-2013. From this I gather that once the WADA official is present he attempts to collect samples from everyone in reach, not just the specific IRTP entry.

Jerker Karlsson says
Seems to be somewhat of a cat-and-mouse game with the testing. I wonder what would happen to the results in weightlifting if all athletes that were set to compete internationally had to train at a specific facility where doping controls were carried out every week and food, medical help and stuff like that were the same for all.
