Meanwhile in China …
Maybe one of the most exciting weightlifting competitions this year is currently going on in China.
It’s time for Chinese nationals.

weight says
when mens compete?
Realist says
4/16 for the men.
The standard for the women’s 48 was 208kg and for the 53 was 232kg, below which lifters risk not being elected for the Olympics despite winning. Both times, only the winner reached this standard.
grobpote says
Whaahh,this is WL porn! Lovely!
Realist says
69 was disappointing (no joke intended). Xiang Yanmei seems to be tending to some injury, only got 120+145 while Zhang Wangli actually got much worse with greater body-weight! Why?? She could clean and jerk 150 while a kg lighter last year and now that she’s grown more into the weight class, she only gets 135? By the way, no one made standard for that class since it was set at 270kg. I wouldn’t have any confidence putting Kang Yue up against Rim, Podobodeva and Nadezhda at this point so I think the 4 girls going to Rio will be Hou Zhihui (48), Li Yajun (53), Deng Wei (63), Xiang Yanmei (69). 53 is most iffy with Hsu and Chinshanlo as rivals; and 75+ results probably won’t matter because it’s just too desperate to hope that Meng Suping could take out Kashirina.
gdfgdgfdgffdf says
We will see how much Zhou and Meng lift tomorrow.
Realist says
Is Zhou lifting? I thought she might still be not fully back yet from her appendicitis procedure that kept her out of last years nationals and worlds. If Zhou is back in full force (high 140’s snatch + 190’s clean and jerk), then there is a chance, as long as Kashirina is not in 2014 form. Either way, the most competitive class that I mentioned above at this point is the 53’s with two powerful foreign threats (Chinshanlo, Hsu) to a Chinese athlete (Li Yajun) who is not necessarily in WR-breaking from. If Meng or Zhou does extremely well tomorrow (and I imagine the standard to be very high, at least 335, more likely slightly above 340), they’ll weigh the chances of the winner defeating Kashirina against the chances of Li Yajun taking down both Chinshanlo and Hsu. I think we’ll still most likely to see the Chinese go into the 53’s rather than the 75+.
Святослав says
100 % will in RIO-2016 ( from Chinese Team) weight : 48 kg and 63 kg (this is 100 % Olympic Gold for China in RIO). and Zhou Lulu (she really can Beat our russian Kashirina in Rio with (146 + 190 (or 195 kg) and 4 Place ( I do not know) ? I think or Kang Yue (75) or Xiang Yanmai (69) – but Not 58 kg (where Champion will super-bulgarian Girl Boyanka KOSTOVA (Azerbaijan)) and Not 53 kg). Yes, RIM JONG SIM (North Korea) will in RIO in weight 69 kg (where with her Result ( 126 + 156 kg) – she Absolutely Favorite for Gold – against chinese Xiang Yanmei (120 + 145 kg). Meng Suping (+75 kg) – this is Psychological Loser and she always Lost Kashirina. Therefore I think 4 Chinese girls going to RIO will in weight : 48 kg ; 63 kg (Deng Wei) ; 75 kg Kang Yue (she real can make Lifting (130 + 160) ; and in +75 kg great Zhou Lulu can going to Rio for her 2-second GOLD). { China Team : 48 kg; 63 kg ; 75 kg ; +75 kg). If Zhou Lulu does not going to RIO (from her procedure problem with Appendicitis), then from China must to be weights : 48 kg ; 63 kg ; 69 kg ; 75 kg
Realist says
Zhou Lulu is not going to Rio; she didn’t even compete. And even 146+190 is slim guarantee of winning against Kashirina. Why do you think Rim will not only drop to 69 but will, at 69, lift more than she could at 75?
By the way, in the 58kg video at 1:09:48, the Chinese commentator accused Rim of faking her injury in Houston, saying that after the event, he went backstage and saw her happily joking and rough-housing with her teammates just like there was nothing wrong with her. Not sure if that’s true, but that’s what he said.
I think there is not much up in the air for the men’s team for China. There are 6 slots and a maximum of 6 categories that China may win in: 56, 62, 69, 77, 85, 94. The biggest question is whether Liu Hao will perform very well (180+228) and earn a spot or not well enough and end up causing the Chinese coaches to use his spot to send a double in the 56 (Wu JingBiao+ Long Qingquan, Meng Cheng, or Li Fabin), 69 (Liao Hui + Shi Zhiyong), or 77’s (Lv Xiaojun + Su Ying).
gdfgdgfdgffdf says
I don’t think they will go against olympic standard rule. Only four girls made it:
– HOU Zhihui
– LI Yajun
– DENG Wei
– MENG Suping
No need to speculate about the condition of other athletes. Nobody knows what shape they will be, especially Russians (with all that doping problems popping out all the time).
wlift84 says
The standard is 340 for +75.

gdfgdgfdgffdf says
Wlift84, thanks for the link.
Wow, just realized how stupidly high the standard for 75+ category. Until 2014 340kg was 6 kg above world record until Kashirina had her rocking performance.
Other standards look incredibly high but somewhat reasonable. For example look at 69 category standard – 270kg which is 16kg below world record. To be fair it is compared to Liu Chunhong’s performance – 286kg, who is the best female weightlifter ever so far (two olympic golds and both times her total would get her olympic gold for the 75 category).
Conclusion: The standard 340kg for 75+ category is unfair. 😀
Realist says
The 63 standard was huge! 260 was 1kg less than the WR, and Deng Wei destroyed it! She said she only planned to do 262, but was feeling excellent, so did 264. On the other hand, I don’t at all understand why the standard for the 48 was so high. 208? 200 is basically unreachable for any non-Chinese 48 so I never believed that they were serious about those standards. Even if the best score was a tad over 200, they would be fools to skip that category.
Realist says
Very good point; we don’t know what form Kashirina will show up in in lieu of the recent bust. She’s also had her first offense early so she needs to be careful. BUT, as we said, Meng missed standard by 10kg and it would just be stupid to not send Xiang Yanmei. Who will challenge her? Zapparkul? What if Hou Zhihui did 207 instead of 210? She missed 208 standard so they won’t send a 48? Who’s going to beat 207 from the 48’s? What if someone in 58 made 247? She goes? That’s still not good enough to beat Boyanka. The announcers repeatedly said in Chinese that nothing is set in stone and that the athletes will be continuously evaluated for their training after the competition for a final decision to be made. The Chinese are very flexible so the “Olympic standard rule” is almost certain to be broken at leisure and a moment’s notice. It’s basically a suggestion instead of a rule.
gdfgdgfdgffdf says
Just found out the standard for 75+ category. 🙂
You are right, it seems more reasonable to send Xiang Yanmei over Meng.
wlift84 says
Zhou Lulu having to likely retire at the height of her powers (after setting a WR) and not because of a WL injury or ban but illness is such a sad story. She was good for 150+195.
wlift84 says
@realist: anything interesting here from Wang Guoxin?
https://youtu.be/XuTDuWTygF0
Realist says
He said they have to figure out why Kang Yue bombed. Her training was good and she was in good form. Also, one failure does not represent absolute failure and that is also true for success. This meet was only one of the things to be considered when selecting the athletes for Rio. Their ensuing training and progress will be the real test. The coaches are intimately familiar with every athlete’s condition so even if someone did extremely well here, if the coaches feel that that consistency was not apparent in training (and thus most likely not repeatable in Rio), she may not be selected and the opposite is true as well.
Oh my god, he better not be talking smack about Deng Wei… LOL
wlift84 says
thx. also here are 3min with Hou Zhihui:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcc3LcG9hvk
only need to translate if she says something of note obv
Realist says
She gives her performance a 90% rating. Her max training results are 100+120. Also, she was really rooting for Tan Yayun’s 120 attempt (which would have taken her clean and jerk gold away) because she says Tan is her training sister and that she’s certain Tan would have rooted for her too if the situation were reversed.
Lil B's 13th Disciple says
You have any idea what been going on with Tian Tao as of late?
Realist says
Don’t know, brah. I’m actually happy that as of late, due to the men’s team disaster in Houston, they’ve adopted more of a shut-the-puck-up-and-train attitude rather than a show-off attitude. I’m also most interested in Tian Tao’s progress.
Sagan Garvey says
I particularly want to see Lu and Tian do well because they’re squat jerkers. Every since Worlds last year people have been questioning them and that particular technique. I have a feeling that Tians been dropped since then though. There’s been no footage of him since then, but i’ve seen some of the others. I would hope not, I really liked Tian as a lifter.
Realist says
LOL no no no no, Tian hasn’t been dropped. Where the hell are they gonna find a replacement half as strong as this kid? Check out this instagram from China; Tian’s been modeling a little (WTF) and they’re posting his junior pictures. He’ll show. As long as he’s willing to train, they won’t give up on him.
https://www.instagram.com/yangyang7878/
Sagan Garvey says
Yeah i’ve seen that picture.
I saw comments saying he was dropped and then I saw numerous comments stating he was going in to modelling lmao, that was the picture I was linked too. I didn’t want to believe it, but I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.
Realist says
China is a highly ability-based society. If Tian Tao were going into modelling, I’d highly highly recommend that he get an Olympic gold medal (or at least World) first to boost his career. If he were just modeling muscles, body-builders could do it better. But if he were modeling as an Olympic champion like Liu Xiang or Guo JingJing, then he could tap into that niche role and become many times more successful.
asong28 says
Just wanted to say your insight has been excellent and much appreciated! Where in China are you from? I’m shandong born.
Realist says
Thanks! I’m so honored to be able to follow Chinese weightlifting and let it inspire me! I’m from Nanjing!
Realist says
Hahaaaa, what did I tell ya? No way they’d drop Tian Tao. They’d have to be complete morons…
On another note, the announcer says that Tian Tao has gone up to 225 in the clean and jerk in recent training!
Sagan Garvey says
Bro i’m so fucking stoked. Good to see Tian again. And 225 C&J?? 400kg total at Rio incoming.
Also I saw another comment of yours saying China can only take 4 categories in weight classes. Does that mean they won’t be able to take Tian, Lu Xiaojun, Liao Hui, Chen Lijun and Long quinquan all at the same time? Or is that not the case.
Realist says
No, 4 women and 6 men total is the max limit for any country for weightlifting at the Olympics. That limit is not for every nation; it has to be earned.
Sagan Garvey says
Wow, so assuming they’re in optimal condition. China are about to sweep up 56kg, 62kg, 69kg, 77kg AND 85kg classes? Lmfao. 94kg and 105kg+ should be interesting. 105kg not so much since Ilya will probably own that category.
Realist says
LOL That would be VERY optimal (they’ve done it before in the 2009 World’s in Goyang), but the 56 is extremely tough with Om Yun Chol there (unless the recent PED bust on North Korea has dropped him down a notch) and possibly Kim Thach Tuan returning in form, 62 should be no problem, 69 should be fine with Liao Hui (unless he bombs the snatch), 77 should be fine with Lv Xiaojun (assuming Lv stays in form and Rahimov doesn’t improve too much), 85 is still very iffy with Okulov improving fast, Aukhadov possibly back in form, Rostami hit and miss with his own massive clean and jerks, and Tian Tao’s still questionable consistency in the colossal jerk category. In all, I’d say 4 gold medals would be a pretty handsome haul for just the men.
As for the 4 women, I’d say it’s possible to get all 4 gold IF the categories are chosen correctly. 48 should be a breeze, Deng Wei should take the 63’s assuming she stays in form, Xiang Yanmei is a tank and will definitely win the 69’s if healthy (which she’s not entirely now, but there isn’t much challenge to her anyway), and that’s 3. The 4th is a hard choice… send Li Yajun to the 53? You risk her getting pummeled by Chinshanlo’s massive clean and jerk or Hsu’s overall excellent performance (if Hsu is back in form). 58 is a no go LOL. Do you send Kang Yue to the 75? Where’s Rim? Is Rim gonna stay in 75 or drop to 69? If she stays in 75, Kang Yue has about half a chance of beating her; if not, Kang is open for the gold assuming Podobodeva and Nadezhda don’t pull off any late-career miracles. OR do you send Meng Suping to 75+ hoping that the recent massive drug bust (that has taken out so many Russians) in Houston has forced Russia to tone down Kashirina’s vitamins, which might cause her to show up in flop form (the only way Meng can take her down)? It would be a great loss if Kashirina showed up in 315-320 form but Meng wasn’t there to stop her because Bear-Mode-Kashirina (2014 348 total) bluffed China out; that would be a tactical victory for Russia.
Sagan Garvey says
Personally, I don’t know about Tian being “inconsistent”. I think his performance at world’s was down to a bad choice of starting weight. I mean he’s hit 180 snatch in training and 225 C&J in training. Also, if the Chinese team get it right and he starts off with the right numbers, I think Tian would come out on top, regardless of what level the competition is at (Okulov, etc…) that’s just my personal opinion though.
As for the women…. I would send Li Yajun, she’s looking ready.
Realist says
Tian Tao is definitely inconsistent. After hitting 218 in Incheon, his head has been in the clouds. He didn’t do well in Kazan, bombed in Houston, and during the Chinese nationals of 2015 and test of strength before Houston, both times, he missed 219-220. Please just do 216 then, but he doesn’t want it; he only wants the WR. During the test of strength, he only snatched 170 opener and during the nationals of 2015, he refused to take any weight between 210 and 219!! Bombing in Houston has brought him down to earth and now, we finally see him being steady and going with normal progression (207, 212, 220). (By the way, the explanation for why he bombed wasn’t inappropriate start weight; it was that he tweaked his back on his final warm up!) I can’t say if he can remain good like this but I sure hope so. In this world, the 3 people who want to see Tian Tao succeed the most are his mother, his coach, and ME! LOL
Li Yajun’s readiness must be assessed in relation to her competition. I doubt Chinshanlo will show up less ready, and Hsu is a lottery draw. If there is clear weakness in another category (like if Rim is out of 75 and Podobodeva/Nadezhda are feeling old), it’s much safer to go there than to have to fight tooth and nail in the 53’s. My main gripe with going into the 53’s is that Li is a snatch specialist and Chinshanlo is a clean and jerk specialist, which means that all things equal, Chinshanlo will have the advantage of certainty in choosing the winning weight while Li will have to guess how much of a lead she’ll need to open in the snatch. For the same reason, Om is so deadly compared to Wu because Wu must guess how much of a lead to open in the snatch and how high to clean and jerk to keep it out of reach for Om while Om knows for sure what weight he needs to clean and jerk to win. That certainty means no wasted kilos and no unnecessary risks. Also for the same reason, Lu Yong defeated Rybakov in 2008 and Ilya Ilyin has never lost the total despite rarely ever securing the gold in the snatch.
wlift84 says
It’s clearly time to send Zhou Jun again, but this time as 48! That’ll work!
Anyway, since Liu Hao missed the 94 standard I hope they’ll take Wu Jingbiao as well.
56 insurance is badly needed, 62 Chen can win with openers, 69 Liao only needs one good snatch and 77 insurance Lu Haojie is out (Zhong and Su aren’t at 370 quality).
Technically Yang Zhe could meet the 105 standard tomorrow (420, his best iirc 416) but it would be pointless against Ilyin/Nurudinov/Bedzhanyan.
Realist says
Why Zhou jun as 48? Do you feel Hou Zhihui might… lose?? I like Hou. She’s young and can become double Olympic Champ.
Yes, I think for now, men’s team should be:
56: Wu, Long
62: Chen
69: Liao
77: Lv
85: Tian
wlift84 says
It’s a joke about her being chosen for London 2012 as a 53 when she was a full 58 with little experience at that point. And Ji Jing lifting 230 in the nationals, more than OG gold. That entry made absolutely no sense.
Basically biggest Chinese WL blunder in recent memory (apart from selling lifters I guess).
Realist says
I was thinking that it’s very interesting that the 53’s is basically Li Yajun vs Chinshanlo vs Hsu, 3 Chinese girls representing 3 competing entities LOL
wlift84 says
Well Hsu is a Taiwanese native so to me that’s a different category, homegrown talent and all. Chinshanlo is Zhao Changling with a new passport.
Realist says
Yeah, and Hsu is Xu ShuQing with a renegade province passport competing from CHINESE Taipei, blood-lined from the Chinese soldiers that Chiang Kai Shek (correctly spelled Jiang JieShi) tricked into following him onto a small island under the promise that they will regroup and retake control of China, their homeland. All 3 are as Chinese as mapo tofu.
gdfgdgfdgffdf says
Why would you send Wu and Long? They will probably get silver and bronze. I’d rather send Shi Zhiyong in 69 kg where he would get silver and gold for Liao.
Realist says
Chinese generally don’t care about any medal other than gold. If you send Shi, that’s almost guaranteed second fiddle to Liao. But both Wu and Long have chances to catch Om off guard and end up with gold. Plus, with 2 guys, it’s possible to play a little with the resting time to either make Om follow himself with just 1 minute instead of 2 or to use 1 guy’s lift (if he’s not doing well) to buy rest time for the other guy. That’s kinda playing dirty though… It really depends on what form they’re in come end of June (which I heard is the deadline for submitting names).
Guy says
Does anyone know what happened with Deng Mengrong?
Realist says
Injured, busted up, worn out, not in form altogether. And I gotta say, she picked a fine time to be out of commission cus with Boyanka, China wasn’t going to send a 58 to Rio anyway.
gdfgdgfdgffdf says
Boyanka showed very good performance only once in her career. I’m not sure what chances are that she will perform the same as in Houston. Look at recent Europeans she totaled 235, with starting weights much smaller.
Realist says
Yes, but with only 4 slots out of 7 categories, the Chinese coaches are unlikely to want to risk the chance of meeting a suddenly-in-form-again Boyanka at the Olympics. And even though her 235 at the Euros was peanuts compared to her performance in Houston, 235 is still very good and with just a little uptick, a challenge even for an in-form Deng Mengrong.
David Oliveira says
Disagree. Kostova showed that Houston 2015 level not once, not twice, but actually three times. In Tbilissi Kostova had already the form to take the WR’s but wanted to target the ER instead.
At the recent europeans her lifts were damn easy, like if she was just training. To me it seemed that she could’ve totalled 15+ kg if she wanted.
gdfgdgfdgffdf says
Oops, missed that 2015 Europeans.
LP says
Lu with an unofficial total world record of 381! He went 174/207.
Lil B's 13th Disciple says
Does anyone know what happened with Tian Tao?
GHM says
wlift84 Thank you for great links.
IOC is ruining good weightlifting competition in Olympics. WL is one of a few sports that countries can not field full team even if all athletes qualify. This is not a problem in wrestling where any country can send a full team as long as each one is qualified in their weight category. This sham is done under notion of keeping number of athletes manageable. IWF will not fight this because of the old guards who are running the sport and want to get a royal treatment during games.
What to do:
1. Have a world championship or world cup after Olympics. World championships are usually later in a year. I suggest one such competition in late Nov or December.
2. Aggressive campaign by fans like wrestling to increase number of entry athletes to Olympics. This is a winnable proposal. IOC has to accept increase of lady lifters by one or two or IOC will be accused of discrimination.

Don’t get me started on this topic…
