It’s time for what is likely going to be the best weightlifting competition of the year.
The 2017 Chinese National Games in Tianjin.
Being held once every four years, it is the most important national level sports event in China – their national Olympics. The Chinese team prepared all year for this. We’ll see their A listers compete.

wonder what kind of form he’s in, he had a back injury earlier in the year.

This is the first NG without a NR on the women’s side.

Xiang Yanmei’s retiring? I don’t think so. Vacation, probably but looking at how she destroyed her opponents and how solid her clean and jerk was, I’m betting she’ll be back, partially because she’ll get bored after her vacation and the other part because her coaches will convince her to give it another season since without her, China could lose the gold in the women’s 69. If Zhang Wangli did 120+155 like I was hoping, then maybe Xiang will stay retired. Kang Yue’s lifting is the kind that looks like retirement can’t be pushed off any longer, But Xiang? No. It’s extremely rare for an athlete to retire in champion form. When the honeymoon phase of her retirement wears off, she will be seduced by the call of glory once again.
wlift84 says
Well as I understand the source, she wants to retire, but ultimately her fate is with the CWA admins, if they still need her I don’t think it’ll happen. That’s why she says maybe it’ll “only” be a 1-2 year pause.
I also don’t understand how Zhang did 150 at low bodyweight, internationally no less, and since then has not even been close to that number again.
Wang Zhouyu needs to progress to stable 125/150 to have even a small chance against Rim. Her clean isn’t strong yet. It’s crazy that Kang is only 3 years older than her yet looks completely burned out.

A good review by Larry (and his friend). It is interesting to get some information from behind the scenes. Thank you for that.
