Meanwhile in China …
It’s time for Chinese national championships, which this year act as a qualifier for the Chinese national games (which I would love to cover, but don’t have the funds for it. Any potential sponsors reading this? ?).

Does anyone have a schedule for this event? Thanks!
wlift84 says
Not much to say, 8-11th women, 15-18th men, two categories per day. No live coverage afaik.
Gregory Foster says
Thanks! I remember I was able to tune into Tao’s 220 c&j last year and see it live, which was very exciting, so hopefully they play some of the more sensational classes.

Imagine snatching more than the winner of your category yet still finishing outside to top 10 ! Insane standard of lifting
asong28 says
What happened to Li Yajun? Injured after snatch?
wlift84 says
Did an easy 105 c&j (not shown) to have a top 16 total (NG entries).
Mike says
Where is Hou (W48kg)? The youngster who almost went to Rio? I think she snatched 90kg or more last year..
wlift84 says
Taking it easy with a 190 total. She should be back to her 210 form by September.
Jerker Karlsson says
What is the difference between the Chinese national championships and the Chinese national games? Is the latter more prestigious?
wlift84 says
Huge (10k athletes) multi-sport event hosted every four years, basically the Chinese Olympics. So yes more important to win it, but naturally the same lifters are in contention.
Jerker Karlsson says
Great, thank you.
wlift84 says
China like Russia is unfazed by this newfangled 90kg category business.
GHM says
Yes, at this point of women weightlifting many good 63-69 kg lifters can finish in top three of 75 and 90 categories. My guess is it will get worse before we see improvement. In my opinion all weight categories have to change for both men and women.
Rocky Dean-Shoji says
I guess Liao will take some time to recuperate after all that time off! I was hoping he’d clean sweep the 69’s but I guess I was mistaken

Any Chinese speakers still around? We have a few comments from Chen Lijun, Liao Hui, Lü Xiaojun and Tian Tao:

Liao Hui and Chen Lijun offered nothing too interesting. They didn’t train well; they didn’t train hard. They just wanted to qualify and they did. Chen especially said his strength was very low coming into this comp.
Lu Xiaojun said that in his old age, his training has to begin earlier than other athletes to recover his strength, but it seems he’s not as old as he thought. He says his recovery went unexpectedly fast and he went into this competition quite strong. But, they still kept with the conservative game plan so he says the weights were so light, he was always unsure, scared to over-pull.
Tian Tao has a wrist injury and came hoping to make just 1 lift in each category, qualify for the National Games, and go home. He says he hasn’t really trained for a month! Hence, his snatch was quite low and he/his coach decided to forsake the 3rd lift. BUT, entering the clean and jerk, he suddenly found out that CCTV5 decided to live-broadcast it so he wanted to give the audience a show with some better lifts. I’m guessing his wrist injury was an outward-torsional injury that didn’t affect the clean and jerk.
Jerker Karlsson says
Seems Liao Hui and Qingquan Long really did take it easy judging by the results. What are the standards to qualify for the National Games?
Side note: Looking at the 56 kg results really shows the depth of the Chinese team in that category. Many names I recognize from international competition, followed by many more with really good totals.
Realist says
Standards are to be in the top 16 in each category so really not high. Everyone (that we have been following) qualified and that was all they wanted, especially for those exhausted from Rio training (or training to be a possible back-up).
Jerker Karlsson says
Do you know if the Chinese Games are approved for world records?
Realist says
They are not.
Jerker Karlsson says
Ok, thanks.

Tian Tao… hell yeah
