The Asian Championships this year will be held in Ningbo, China from 18th to 28th of April – with lifting to begin on the 20th.
It is an IWF gold level event, so we can expect many of the top Asian lifters to attend. They will try to improve their totals and hence ROBI points in order to qualify for Tokyo 2020. There are around 270 entries before verification.
Gregor will be on location to provide updates, training hall footage and very likely world record lifts! Follow the instagram stories on @atginsta for training hall updates. This is only possible thanks to continued ATG reader support!

Podcast Episode 5 from China – Police visited us!
Podcast Episode 4 from China – The 96kg Edition.
We talk about our experience and difficulties dealing with insanely stupid media rules, filming in the training hall and food.
This will give you an idea why I am not posting competition lifts while the competition is still ongoing here. – Gregor

How to watch:
There will be no official (global) streaming by the AWF/IWF through youtube or a different platform.
Broadcasting is limited to China domestically via CCTV5. This channel is not easily accessible from the rest of the world. Unfortunately we don’t know of an easy solution either, so your best bet is to google for an unofficial CCTV5 stream. Traditionally they are rife with ads, pop-ups and not the most stable.

Wonder what Rostami and Ilin are packin’. Ulanov could be a challenge to the Chinese duo at 81 with his clean and jerk. Don’t know what’s up with Rahimov, going all over the place from 77 to 73 to 89. Didn’t even know it was possible to pack on weight like that; makes Tian Tao’s 85 to 96 look reserved…
Jerker Karlsson says
Yea, why not 81 kg for Rahimov? maybe Ulanov have an even harder time getting to 96 kg. I don’t know who is the taller one, but when the weight classes got changed I first thought Ulanov was going to 96 kg and Rahimov to 81 kg. But here we are. 🙂
Victor says
I almost thought it was a typo, that Rahimov should be 81, but then I saw 81 was full so I knew it wasn’t. Well, I’ll tell you this, he will likely be a very light 89 (maybe just 82.XXkg) and may do better in that division than in 81 because 89 is not Olympic so it is far less competitive. He might even make up huge Robi points there if he’s able to win, which is very possible given how weak that category is.
Ulanov looked quite thin at 85 or even 87.XX at the 2015 President’s Cup when he did 175+219 so I am surprised he went down rather than beef up, which I thought would be easier.
Also noticed Feng Ludong went down to 67. He’s also quite lanky but he might take the snatch record because he’s done over 160 at 69kg in the old classes.
