Aleksey Lovchev 257kg Clean & Jerk Almaty 2014 World Championships

November 19, 2014 By Gregor Winter

2014 World Championships Highlight …

Aleksey Lovchev’s 257kg Gold Medal Clean & Jerk.

Yes he had a bad day in the Snatch (his 195kg Snatch in the warm up area had us hoping for a good session), but this 257kg in my opinion made up for it in my book.

257kg is even 1kg heavier than what he did in the Russian Championships (212 + 256).

Trivia:

  • he became the third Russian lifter to win Clean and Jerk in men’s +105kg,  after Evgeny Chigishev (RUS, 2007) and Chemerkin (1998, 1999)
  • this C&J is the heaviest weight at World Championships since Hossein Rezazadeh’s 263 kg in 2002

His 257 kg on Worlds looked way easier, than his 256 on Russian Nationals. Looked good for 263-265 kg.

The fact that he is losing close to nothing from his performance at nationals and even making PRs at international competitions is a rare one (compared to Dmytro Chumak for example). I really like that. Although I think he will not be quite able to touch neither the snatch nor the clean&jerk world record, I think he has the potential for the total record.

Really? I think he has a chance at both, with a better chance at the snatch recrod

The chance is there of course, it’s just that I don’t think he will get one of them 😉

I agree with wlift84’s comment further down. It’s not so much about the chances or the physical capability, more about questions like “Does he need it (in ordner to win)?” or “Can he afford it (to miss world record attempts)”.

Reza only had the chance for his 263.5 because he secured the gold with his first lift and had two attempts left.

Lovchev is legit strong. He’s capable of 260+ and that is awesome.

I think he already was in exceptional condition and his snatch misses were just nerves. He was a favourite unlike last year with his huge nationals total.

The 257 didn’t look like a limit here.

BUT extrapolating and imagining historic results has a bad track record as well. We all remember how easy Reza’s 263 & 263.5 looked like. Yet he never did more. Time to dial down the #hype until it actually happens.

Albegov looks like he could do 260 if he needed to. He looked very tired at this worlds and STILL won gold.

Yeah, although Albegov always looks a bit tired. Not a particularly aggressive lifter.

Since this is the closest to a general SHW post… anybody know why Albegov changed his singlet half way through?

Why do you slow down the video in most awkward and not interesting spots?

So you have something to complain about.

The snatch misses probably took the pressure out of him, but in the C&J he did some great lifting. I liked how balanced he looked in the 257, as it didn’t seem to be his limit that day.
