Brian Shaw 448kg (985lbs) Deadlift

August 3, 2013 By Gregor Winter

Brian Shaw …

Last time, with 411kg he said “I feel like I could do this anytime that I want to”.

Below he works up to a 448kg (985lbs) Deadlift.

The goal of the workout was to work up to a big single without going over 100%.

Since I wanted to check out when the 2013 World’s Strongest Man is this year I found this sad news on Wikipedia:

Since ESPN dropped World’s Strongest Man in June 2013, it has raised more questions about drug use and drug trafficking with competitors. There is a chance this show will be cancelled permanently by IMG World.

Update: WSM was picked up by CBS (Thanks Schu and Joe)

If you go to the link and scroll down it states that IMG has announced a multi-year deal with CBS to air the Worlds Strongest Man competition!

I have heard through the grapevine that the athletes will not know the events before this years competition…. HOPEFULLY, this change will be a very good thing for the future of WSM. Personally, I think the televised set-up of WSM has really hurt the competition as a whole. 1-3 events spaced out throughout the day, over a 2 week period, is not a set-up that a competition that determines the “WSM” should have in my opinion. There is a number of aspects of Strongman that separate it from other strength sports, one of which is the endurance factor! IMO WSM should have separate qualifiers leading up to the finals, and then have a brutal 8-10 event final over the course of 2 days or so. In more recent years WSM has been less and less. I believe last years final had 6 events… are you kidding me?

    Hopefully this will improve things!

Scrap the straps, not a real deadlift with them.

wait, hang on- he just pulled 985 off the floor, but it’s not a real deadlift because of the straps? right….

correct me if i’m wrong, and I may be….but if you’re deadlifting in a certified powerlifting meet, are you not disallowed straps? Don’t get me wrong, that is a phenomenal amount of weight to be lifting regardless. But the OP had a point, straps “easily” add 100lbs or possibly more with these guys.

strongman allows straps but powerlifting does not….since he is a strongman competitor, no problem with him using straps

Not the first time I’ve heard that.
I’ve seen other comments at https://facebook.com/strongmanacademy Looking forward to what kind of input Shaw has when http://StrongmanAcademy.com opens.

I’m sure Mr. Shaw will take your expert advice and adjust his training accordingly.

Not a real dead lift ! That’s to funny! I’d like to see you do that with or without straps. Always the nay Sayers. Let see you qualify for a single event and place in the top 10, hell even in the top 30. Before you start speaking your mind, post a video of your 985lb dead lift, then we can start to entertain your idea.
