Fascinating. This combines men’s and women’s medals, I am guessing. I knew Egypt had been a power in weightlifting in the past, but I was not aware that they had even been dominant in one year. Poland also surprised me, both in 1966 and in ranking number five overall.. I imagine that it owes its number five ranking to the performance of Polish women. And China — what more can be said?

With regards to Poland, not at all actually. Polish men have been collecting medals since the later 1950s. Out of 64 WWC golds only 6 came from women.

Thanks for the info. I was not aware that Poland was that accomplished. They have quite a good “school” or tradition in weightlifting.

That would make more sense if they increased the quota of athletes per country in competition according to that country’s population.
