Meanwhile in China …
You can’t manage what you can’t measure – William Edwards Deming
Well, now the Chinese weightlifting team can.
Looks like they’ve gotten themselves some “instant lift assessment” stations.
It tracks the lift’s bar path (in 3d), measures speeds and so can give the coach & athlete instant feedback.
Update: Detailed Presentation!
Update: Translation from commenter LuLzCatz:
- They hold model competitions, or trials
- They have a machine which measures height, relative height, speed and acceleration
- Researcher guy gives results to coaches, coaches adjust their training
- Researcher gives history of playback analysis, started 20 years ago (the part with the VHS tapes)
- Started with 2d stills and has evolved to 3d analysis
- Coach gives example on the need of precision “You need to snatch to a height of 106cm, if you only snatch to 104cm you won’t succeed…I think this will assist the coaching greatly”

Thanks for that

I like the Deming quote, haha. Manufacturing analysis seems to go hand in hand with many types of sport.

Wait… is that a Kinect? This tech might not be so out of reach after all (assuming someone is willing to develop the software)

german weightlifting analyzer does pretty much the same thing i guess?
Gregor says
