Chinese Youth Weightlifting Training

July 3, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Phil Johnson seems to visit China’s weightlifting training halls every year.

At the moment he is uploading tons of clips to his YouTube Channel – PJTrainer.

Update: So apparently these are not new. Well, hopefully some of you still found them useful.

Update: Phil commented and said most of these videos are from his 2010 trip. Some are new and were taken by Coach Ma Jianping.

If these are newly uploaded, why have Ive seen them before? I know for a fact I have seen the warmup and the jerk plyo’s. I believe the jerk plyo’s were on vimeo if I remember correctly. Ive seen the warmup somewhere too… Not sure if it was Pendlay’s, reddit, or the bb forums. Just know Ive seen them before. So now I am confused.

I don’t think these are “new” videos by Phil Johnson. I think these are still from the 2010 trip he took. Some of those guys in the video look EXACTLY the same (with the same haircuts) as they did in some of his older videos. Unless they somehow didn’t age or do so extremely slowly then it’s from the same trip.

I also wondered how Phil is able to train in China. Where is he staying? How is he allowed to go to the national team training hall and film there? Aren’t those considered training secrets?

AH! I believe you’re correct, sir. Those must be from his older trip, just uploaded now. As for your second statement, I think he is training with one of the university teams, not the national team. I do recall people somehow gaining access to one of the centers they select the national team from(like regional centers I guess, like where Lu would go when not prepping for major comp?). Though when they were there is was strictly a tour. No touching anything. No training as well. Just look.

I think some people who have trained under coach Ma(who will be coaching @LSU), have been to china. All of the people that I can think of that have mentioned they have gone to china to train WL, perhaps just watch, have all trained under Ma at some point. Now that is just an assumption, though I he knows someone who can get you in.

Mmmh, my bad. I hadn’t seen them before so I thought I’d better share them.

Are these clips from Phil “Jake” Johnson?   I hope so.  Is he still lifting?  Before getting injured I thought he was about to blast through a 300kg total.
