Today in the Daily Dmitry …
Dmitry shows parts of his ab workout.
Lay on your back, lift up your legs 90 degrees and have a partner push down your legs.
I have never tried this, but I assume the violent eccentric part will give you lots of DOMS. And if that doesn’t burn enough, finish it off with regular sit ups.
I really like the comment from Tania on the ATG Facebook Page: “I’ve done this – you’ll fear sneezing the next day”
finlifter says
Got taught this because I made the deadly mistake of asking an old school lifter for ab work, so he tied a piece of string around my ankles and had me lay on a bench with my feet up in the air while he yanked that string down.
My entire midsection was on fire for the next few days.
Gregor says
Gotta love old school lifters ๐ Thanks for sharing.
nate says
used to do these all the time in high school weight training, intense, especially when your partner has it out for you
Rekoj says
All the “new age/functional” trainers are going to have a fit about this and go off about spinal flexion and blah blah blah. It is funny how the strongest people in the world do what works and nothing else.
Thrand says
Damn right. They’re also gonna have a fit because this is a tried and trusted old exercise that’s been around for ages. There’s no marketing hurra in this, no way for them to write 3 articles for M&F and other metrossexual mags about this fantastic new exercise they’ve just come up with.
But this only happens with self-proclaimed gurus who don’t really know that much about training and are just trying to make a name for themselves.
When you speak to the people who really are in the know – not the “functional”, “1 new exercise per month”, online-marketing specialists – then most times we’ll see that they go old-school all the way.
As for the exercise, even Zass was doing this back in the day. Standard exercise in gymnastics and combat disciplines. Kicks butt.
CasualLurker says
Definitely agree with both of you!

Man, I do like klokov, and it is indeed awesome that he started his youtube channel, but atg really got flooded with his videos lately.
Gregor says
Of the last 10 posts, 4 where with Dmitry. I can live with that ๐
JRut says
Yeah, he’s awesome, but he’s also blatantly courting Xfit $$$ at the twilight of his Oly career and a lot of the stuff he’s putting out is dangerous for 95% of the population. It’s cool and all, but I’d much rather see him stay healthy, pass a drug test, and snatch 205 in competition.
T says
Dude is one of the greats and has a right to use his talents to make money. Wouldn’t you? If he wasn’t providing value to the Xfit community no one would pay him. Also, the average person certainly can’t handle the weights he does but as to the movements themselves, there’s no more danger there then in any regular man’s workout.
steven says
Klokov presses are pretty dangerous for the average gymrat without the shoulder flexibility. His deficit sldl aren’t something i would recommend to any average lifter. Also, he is training daily for years and is the 1% in the world who can do this without getting constantly injured.
He also spends lots of time stretching and warming up. Not a lot of people realise this and do this stuff without any decent stretching or warming up at all. And i mean really warming up, not a couple of sets with lesser weight.
Luc Lapierre says
Look, at some point people have to take responsibility for their own safety.
If some idiot hurts himself because he doesn’t know his own limits or when to stop, that’s his own damn problem.
miscer says
lol i don’t want to start meaningless arguments on the internet but in klokov’s defense he is a weightlifter and they don’t make much money, unless they win a medal or something but even then their income is pale in comparison to most pro athletes. I think its great he is interacting with his fans because in the first place most elite lifter don’t even have a youtube account much less take the time to answer questiosn and emails. I much rather watch klokov videos and even if he is “blantantly trynig to make money” (who isn’t trying to blatantly make money in this world though?”, than some “natural” bodybuilders/fitness experts on youtubes giving people delusional thoughts on how they could achieve certain physiques without the use of roids.
Gregor says
Yeah, since when is making money by a) helping & b) inspiring people doing something you love and have done your entire life (i.e. training for in Dmitry’s case) a bad thing?
Turku says
There’s a bold shimmer of honesty and truth your words. Anyone who is giving you a hard time about probably just doesn’t like their idol being criticised.
Klokov is cool. But c’mon, he’s as mainstream on ATG as Xfit is in the US. It’s not meaningfully justified – he just has the characteristics that enough people in this community favor: Great lifter. Strong. Good physique. Presence on the platform. And he’s a celebrity for his weightlifting success in other circles (at least in Russia).
He has a right to use his talents to make money. Sure. But he doesn’t have a right to exploit people through their admiration of him… whether or not he’s doing that none of us can definitively say – it’s all in his motivations that only his own mind can know. But the circumstances look this way. And lets be honest, it cannot be hard for him to make enough money in Russia to live comfortably. This is a way for him to make as much money as possible.
If I was him, I’d rather devote my experience to helping a *few* people actually become good lifters than touring the world giving thousands of people pretty insubstantial advice. Or at least before doing the world tour, y’know, when you actually have a good coaching history.
Whatever… some people will get good insight out of it and maybe become better lifters than they would’ve been able to without his seminars. And the others will blame him later when the shit don’t work and switch to living vicariously through another popular lifter ๐
Blair Lowe says
We used to do these all the time in gymnastics.
I’ve never heard of any bad DOMS from our gymnasts or training group but then again, gymnast.
KaKTy3 says
Standard exercise used by all Soviet boxers as well. We all did it at the end of every training section (5x/week). And situps too.
teg says
I used to do them when i was in martial arts, we also do them pushing the legs from side to side for the obliques. I totally forgot this exercise, good to remember ๐
Walter M. Forbes says
I watched this video about 3 weeks ago and I started doing this exercise. At least 3 times a week and I see great results! I just one to say thank for the idea.
