Here are 18 year old Huang Ting (Junior World Champ, 63kg) and 19 year old Zhou Xiaojin (Junior Worlds Silver, 63kg) with their last heavy training session before competing at Junior Worlds 2017.
I remember being surprised that this ended up being their heavy day. Both really took their time warming up. They took so many attempts at 50,60 … that I thought this was all that they were going to do that day. So I started focusing on other lifters.
But then it all went super quickly and they were already taking 85 doubles…
Huang Ting’s Workout:
- Snatch 95kg Doubles, 100kg single
- Clean & Jerk up to 120kg
Zhou’s Workout:
- Snatch up to 95kg doubles with some misses.
- Clean & Jerk up to 120kg
Assistance Exercises:
- Rear Delt Flys
- Trapi, Snatch High Pulls
- Wrist Curls
In competition Huang Ting snatched 105kg, clean and jerked 135kg.

i don’t understand why hookgrip said that xiaojing has a russian style second pull. it doesn’t look like that at all.
her second pull follow through is a little less prolonged than other chinese lifters cause her shoulder internal rotation isn’t great (IE elbows don’t point as high up as they could https://www.instagram.com/p/BVcKKYlDvWe/ ). the other thing is regarding her proportions she doesn’t have the long torso, short leg build that a lot of chinese lifters have. these mechanical l differences may give the pull a different look, but the technique is pretty consistent with other chinese lifters

about her shoulder flexibility, do you have any other reason to believe so ? cause on the instagram link you gave, i would point to you the weight on the barbell (140 kg if i didnt miss anything). To me it’s not about flexibility in this video, it’s about the weight being enormous, she would possibly do higher reps with 50 kg instead.
Dan says
that video is probably not the best example. and you are probably right that probably isn’t an issue of flexibility
if you pause the snatches during the turnover/3rd pull, the elbows start to drop below the hands at about chest level. if you look at huang ting the elbows drop below the hands higher at about shoulder/neck level, indicating a better follow through.
this could be one of two things, poor internal rotation, which is unlikely in such a high level lifter. the other problem could be due to lat recruitment during turnover which will pull the elbows down to the torso. a good turnover requires relaxation of the lats to allow the elbows to move away and up from the torso.
just some thoughts. not sure if i am correct

in the image of the video before you play it you can see huang ting’s high pulls have higher elbows than zhou’s. not sure how much of it is due to anatomical, flexibility, or muscle activation differences
