Meanwhile in Greece …
Checking in with Ilya Ilyin. Looks like he is progressing according to plan.
Today he hit a 180kg Snatch off blocks! (14 days after he did 175kg off blocks)
Remember that he did a 200kg Snatch off Blocks during his London Olympics preparation.
Update: The Ilya Ilyin Progress Tracker
Read Dmitry Klokov’s interview with Ilya here.
Update 25.04.2014: Today he got 175kg Snatch from the floor + 222.5kg Clean & Jerk
guest says
That dropping speed…
But to get a bit contrarian, he needs to beat his London numbers to get ahead of a fit Nurudinov. I’m not convinced he can achieve that in his first competition as 105.
Deepblue says
nurudinov’s weak point is the snatch, that’s where ilya can make it through
Aldr says
I beg to differ. Nurudinov made 190 and barely missed 195 at worlds last year.
DeepBlue says
yes but he has a relative bad technique. In a bad day he might bomb out if he get pushed. In the other hand ilya has a constant technique in both lift and we all know that he is a monster of the clean and jerk!
Phil says
Ill say it here first, Nurudinov will defend his title in 2014. Don’t forget Ilya is not the only lifter training for this years WWC. Iam positive Nurudinov will be extremely motivated by what he is seeing. Shaping up to be the most competitive category as long as everyone shows up. Fingers crossed.
grobpote says
I concur. Although you never know what’s going to happen in a competition, Nurudinov should be the winner. I can imagine 240 in the cnj easily for him after last year. I think if Ilya gets in form he and Nurudinov will be on the same level in the cnj but Nurudinov will beat him about 5 or more kilos in the snatch. But of course it’s just some guessing for fun. 🙂
If anybody is expecting 245-250 cnj, well I doubt it’s gonna happen…
phil says
Agreed. I feel 240+ is out of the question this year. However I would relish the opportunity to see it in 2016. If anyone breaks the records I hope it is one of these two. Would be unreal to see a 105 match the great Yuri Zakharevich’s records. Lets hope andrei aramnau can also train well and add more fuel to this fire.
guest says
Considering nobody has done more than 190 since WWC 2011, I don’t think it can be called weak. Sure, the usual suspects of years gone by could beat that if in their prime, but none of them is around or in that condition.
Ilyin has done 185 only once, hence I very much doubt he will aim for much more in his first appearance for 2+ years. I can see 180-185-188, but nothing outlandish.
Also he did 240@103 in training. Either that wasn’t near his max on that occasion, or everyone is overestimating how much his C&J will gain by going up a class considering his 233@94. Is he capable of 240@105 in competition eventually? Sure, but at his first attempt after two years?
Look at Kolecki@105, Demanov@105 or Dolega@105+. Moving up isn’t that easy or always rewarding.
Rob says
True. Ilya’s recent 170 and 172 snatch looked max but his 215 c&j had room to spare. I see Ilya behind Nurudinov by 5 kilos after the snatch… Then things will get exciting!
asdf says
Ilya has been training for about four month now and is far away from peaking. I dont think he will settle for anything less than gold in any further competition he participates.
Rob says
He’ll probably need 190/240 to beat a fit Nurudinov. Can he do it? He’s ILYA ! Who’s Russia gonna through at him? Obviously not Demanov.
phil says
Russia will hopefully have Timur Naniev firing by this years WWC. A young lifter that shows great potential and another lifter that could seriously challenge come 2016.
Aldr says
I still hope Akkaev will be back by 2016. If he would be at his best I would bet on him
phil says
Yes it is ashame what happened to him in 2012. A fit Akkaev would be the man too beat. I hope his medical conditions allow him to lift soon.
Magneto says
Ilya plans to do 193/240 at worlds this year and 196/243 in Rio. I think we can expect a nice battle between him and Nurudinov if N. is in his absolute best shape. The discussion shows it’s not gonna be an easy win for Ilya but nonetheless he will win (imo). Another thing is that the competition is in Kazakhstan – Ilya will be extremely motivated and he’s one of the most consistent lifters anyway. My bet: He will deliver.
Borislav says
“Moving up isn’t that easy or always rewarding.”
Dolega said somewhere that he wants to gain weight in order to prevent injuries. I can imagine that often this is the motivation of people going up a weight class. It can’t be so rewarding in numbers.
Also, I don’t know why people think Ilya will win the 2014 Worlds. Just because he posts a lot of videos and just because he is Ilya… He is trying to get where Nurudinov is now and posting no videos doesn’t mean that Nurudinov is not training right now. If I am not mistaken, Ilya was also talking about how Nurudinov was regularly beating him in internal competitions.
Densyo says
Nurudinov will get killed in the CnJ though.
Ponz says
My vote is for Ilya – literally, we are seeing around a 10kg increase in Ilya’s total almost every week. Now that he is becoming his old self, it’s only a matter of time until he becomes even better. My money is on 191ish/236ish for Ilya at Worlds. I doubt he’ll even show up if he doesn’t feel confident that he will get 1st, though,…
Thrand says
Unwise to underestimate Nurudinov. He is the favorite.
And an Aryamnov in shape beats them both (200 +236 in 2008). Even being significantly far from his best shape, he snatched 184 at the recent EC.
As for the Russians, would be nice to see Akkaev back. Klokov is too busy doing WODs and even if he wasn’t there’s hardly a chance he could beat Ilya, Ruslan, Andrey, or any of the new guys.
Jason says
No one is underestimating Nurudinov. Most here are going with him. I can’t believe how many people are writing off Ilya. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s never to bet against this man. Have we all forgotten that he has NEVER LOST an international competition?
phil says
Time is the only thing working against Ilya this year is time. Ilya is my favorite technician by far. He will be the front runner by 2016 🙂
Ponz says
I agree entirely. It sound ridiculous, but I don’t think anyone can beat Ilya given that he doesn’t get injured. His determination and intensity are virtually unrivaled.
Thrand says
People underestimate Nurudinov when assuming that Ilya is gonna come right in and destroy the competition. Ilya is amazing, but he will have to prove himself in this new weight class. This time he is the wolf climbing the hill. Nurudinov is on top. Nothing against Ilya, of course. One of a kind.
guest says
>Have we all forgotten that he has NEVER LOST an international competition?
People like to mention/quote this, but if you know these competitions it’s still impressive of course, but shouldn’t really be used as a measure to predict the future. Yes, he utterly dominated the 2012 OG. But he also won 2006 & 2011 WWC on bodyweight, 2005 WWC by 1kg and 2008 OG by 3kg. He’s an exceptional lifter but he also had kind spirits.
In another, just slightly different universe he owns one OG gold and a couple of world medals and people respect him but don’t instantly fawn over his every move.
guest says
2 OG golds.
grobpote says
Never lost not just because he is a excellent lifter, but because he kept on skipping years – he didn’t start on lots of international competitions. I am pretty sure he would have lost a few eventually. No one is questioning his ability. He proved himself many times. But nobody is invincible. I didn’t say this. Naim Süleymanoglu did.
Estes says
I love how everyone is on Nurudinov’s jock all of a sudden after last year’s worlds. As great as that competition was for him, it was only 7kg higher than what Ilya’s done a whole weight class lower. Making up >7kg with a move up in weight class is not only reasonable but expected – not to mention that Ilya looked like he more in the tank on both lifts at the OG. Nurudinov has never snatched over 190 and has only C&J’d over 230+ twice. Let me see him repeat his performance from last year’s worlds before I call him the favorite. Ilya would not be entering this year’s worlds if he didn’t know he can win.
phil says
I think the general concensus is that Ilya is the better lifter. He will more than likely obtain his threepeat and win at Rio. Nurudinov is also a talent and Ilya clearly knows this. If all else fails and Nurudinov looks too good whats stopping Ilya from dropping back down and taking the easier path? Gold medal is a gold medal is it not?
James says
Anybody know where to find straps like he uses? I’ve got the iron mind sew easy, but I’d like some longer, non-connected ones like he’s got. And no, I don’t want to cut up a seat-belt to make them, lol.
Raest Thetyrant says
Easy. Just buy any bodybuilding straps, rip the stitching at the loop to undone it and there your are.
Kawi says
Bingo. Rip the stitching off bodybuilding straps. Or just purchase cotton or nylon webbing/strapping from an outdoor/mountaineering store. Two feet for each strap is plenty, and should cost about $1.29.
gfjfgj says
Wait a minute, did all of you forgot that there a guys in that division like Akkaev,Klokov,Aramnau everybody talking about Nurudinov and seems to forgot those 3.
guest says
You certain you’re not a time traveler from the past? Aramnau isn’t in prime time shape since 2010 and the two Russians aren’t even training. Old news all around.
grobpote says
Some of you said that Ilya wouldn’t turn up if he didn’t know he can win. I think none of the kazahstani weightlifting stars could refuse to start in this particular situation. The world champs is going to be held in Kazakhstan. Everybody is expecting them to compete and win. I don’t think that Ilya would say to the president that : Hey man,I am not sure about this so I’m not gonna start OK? 😀
