0:30 Korkyt Ata Airport. That’s where 17 years old Ilya Ilyin departured from for his first world championship. Until now he continues going back to this airport with new titles.

01:21 “How are you, dad?” – Ilya says. – “I didn’t notify you, sorry”

01:25 “When I arrive, I immediately lay down like this, turn on my TV and do nothing”. This is a usual Kazakhstan family. Respect to the parents. Younger brothers obey to the older ones.

01:57 “This is the medal father gave me saying ‘this is a present for you’. I’m so pleased really. For future champion”. “Alexey, son, come on and handle with chairs” – his mom says. “Let’s go”.

To help mother, to set the table for guests, to look after the youngest Ilyin, never break traditions – that’s what the champion grasped from the childhood. Now Ilya is a world sport star, but more than 20 years ago he, a little boy, was running after his brother, who was late for training session.

There was no one to look after the younger, so Alexey took Ilya with him everywhere.

02:38 (Mother Galina Ilyina) “Ilya was about 3 years old, when our acquaintance came and said: ‘what, does ne lift the bar too?’. His legs were just like weightlifter’s, plump. I said ‘Oh, he’s just 3 years old, what are you speaking about’? ”

02:50 (Galym Sikhymov, first coach from 1994 to 1998)”He was sitting right here on the bench. Alexey said: ‘Galym, I brought you the boy’. Start training him. It was 1994. Ilya weighed abou 30 kilos. Yes, it turned out quickly that he’s a weightlifter, because results were increasing. And he was… mobile, fast, strong, back and legs are very strong”.

03:21 “I think I didn’t lift the bar, but just did abs, was running, pulled athletes’ pants off when they were lifiting; I was just blissing, you know, just like a child. He [coach] says: ‘I gave you a little stick for technique development’. So it appears that I started weightlifting at the age of 6. And I thought I started at 8”.

03:48 [Ilya in 1994] “Oooo, what a snout”.

03:52 Many can think that 6 years old boy is too young, running and jumping is what he should do. And he was forced to lift iron. But Ilya considers such ideas inadmissible.

04:16 “And we collected money and bottles and were dressed in mud, and it always flooded and we were walking in water, but played football. I remember playing at the place where now is the sports ground of my name in cold winter”.

04:36 Under guidance of Galym Sikhymov Ilya has been training for 4 years. But then the young coach was drafted into the army, and Ilya got under control of his future second father.

04:50 Vilory Viktorovich Pak, coach from 1998 to 2010: “He grasped the technique very quickly, and had some inborn gift of fearlessness. He was fearless.”

05:10 “A! By the way, this is my first cup. Can you imagine? There was one more thing at the top of the cup. It was presented by Vilory Viktorovich for my birthday. So cute. Seems like he won it somewhere or something and granted it to me. How pleased I was! Yes, and what else does a boy need? [Laughs] Happy”.

05:25 Vilory Pak had a practised eye. Experienced mentor noticed Ilya’s talent right away. They started working in all directions, at that, Ilya and his gymmates worked for real.

05:43 “He always gave us 50 tenge for the 1st place, 30 tenge, 15 or…something.. I exactly remember that I alwaus caught 50 tenge, because I always won. [laughs]. So that, you know, we loved our job and therefore took it seriously, because we were children, but we were earning money. It educated us very well. This is, no fists or fairy tales about future world champions, who live well. We were living well there and right then.”

He barely stood up with 242 after the jerk and you expect to add another 8 kg on top of that?
If he improves his snatch he will be very tough to beat.

They’ll be on the president’s cup page soon. The russian fed has two youtube channels which I’ll post on it for the B groups if there are any. Eurosport (most likely eurosport russia) will be streaming the A sessions.
