Unbelievable. A lot of crazy front squatting going on with Kendall’s recent 272.5 kgs x 12 front squat!

Superhuman strength. It seems alot of the guys front squatting heavy used the “crossed arms” grip. Is this grip the best one? I’ve tried to use this grip but I find the bar less stable compared to the two-fingered clean grip

It could be a flexibility issue since all the people posting these huge front squat videos using the cross-armed grip seem to be powerlifters, not wight lifters. It’s probably the most comfortable way to do it for them.

If I try the cross-armed grip I find it unstable, just as you. Fro me, it makes the front squat harder. However, if you lack the flexibility to hold a good clean grip, maybe it’s the other way around.

I can only manage the two-fingered clean grip, as instructed by Candito in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyDbagKS7Rg It might well be as you say that the cross-armed grip is “the last resort” when front squatting. Less stable but much less demanding of good flexibility in the athlete.

Karlsson (below) is correct: it’s because of flexibility. It is actually much harder to front squat this way! Less stable, but a lot of big powerlifters don’t have much shoulder flexibility since it isn’t required for any of the competition lifts.

What’s the most anybody has ever front squatted? 400kg?

As far as lifts with video evidence: Derek Kendall did a very clean 363 kg front squat, and a less clean 374 kg front squat. (The spotters were certainly touching the bar, but didn’t really seem to be helping much IIRC.)

Uepa is close behind at 360.
I’ve never even heard rumors of 400 kg front squat, although it wouldn’t surprise me. There are always a lot of stories about the lifters of the good ol’ days who supposedly outlifted everyone today. 😉
