Meanwhile in Iran …

Here are Kianoush Rostami’s & Rasoul Taghian’s lifts from the same competition Behdad did 215kg at.

He Snatched 172 (x177) and Clean & Jerked 212kg.

As you may have seen in the update to the last post, Kianoush and Rasoul were selected to represent Iran in the 85kg at the upcoming Asian Games. The Iranians are sending their a game. Let’s hope China does too.

More: Watch his 220kg Clean & Jerk in Training.

Here is Rasoul’s 211kg Clean & Jerk. He did 211 (even 212) in before when he was still competing in the 77kg class.

Both Salimi and Rostami seem to jump forward a bit in both their snatches and cleans. I always considered this a technical flaw in beginners due to lack of strength and not staying over the bar, however it obvously seems to work well for them. I wonder if the is is an “Iranian thing”, or just their personal style.

Must be the style? I think akkaev used to. And if you watch Okulov he does as well on heavy attempts in the clean.

Did they make weight for the event? Before, I thought it could be a competition between a Kazakh, Sa Jae Hyouk, and Tian Tao since their performances are comparable at about 365 but now, unless these Iranians were lifting seriously overweight, it looks like Iran has got this in the bag! What was Taghian’s snatch?

      Rasoul Snatched 160, 165, 168

Rostami is probably maximum 0.5-1 kg overweight, Taghian just moved to 85kg , he doesn’t cut.

Where is this info coming from? If it’s true, and Rostami doesn’t lose half his sh//t leaving the country like he did in 2012 (399 nationals, 380 Olympics) then he’s definitely ahead of the pack coming into the Asian Games.

I’m not sure about this one but this is their routine, they are never more than 2kg overweight. I will ask about his exact weight but he didn’t fail in London because of cutting weight. he just could not handle the pressure, his country didn’t win a single medal at the Olympics before him. I wonder why you are surprised, getting results around 380kg is pretty normal for him. in Iran they consider him a sure gold in Incheon with only Taghian as his serious opponent.

Yeah, 380 sounds like him now but people usually get super-pumped going into to the Olympics, hence he did 399. So if he was 399 back then and lost 19kg just for leaving the country (it wasn’t for cutting weight, as you say) then I wonder if he will lose more than 15kg this time from his 384. Sa Jae Hyouk did 166+202 at the nationals and cleaned 213 plus he has home advantage and from what I hear, was still improving quickly since retraining from injury. Last time he had home advantage, he missed 212 from 77kg with the thinnest of margins so I would say Sa could be dangerous if he’s in form. Other than that, I think Iran looks good for gold.

Is it leaving the country or not having a great meet? 15 kg split from totals is 7.5 kg each lift, that’s really not such a dip in performance coming into a high pressure international meet, I know these guys are elite, but that just doesn’t sound so crazy to me.

I got confirmation, he was 2kg overweight this time. I think there are so many reasons for his failure at the Olympics . if you remember his teammate Moradi missed all his Snatch attempts miserably before him. probably putting more pressure on him. Moradi won the 2012 Asian Championship with 388kg. enough for an Olympic gold. (Rostami won silver with 383) maybe they just peaked at the wrong time
thanks for the info about Sa. do you know about the rest of Korean team ? they are a mysterious team right now I think they didn’t compete internationally after the Olympics.

Don’t think the Koreans have any other medal-hopefuls (except the North Koreans LOL). Sa’s coach said something quite interesting after Sa’s 368 nationals performance. The coach says he will improve 26kg by the Asian Games, which doesn’t sound realistic to me as that matches the 394 world record.

looks like a bounce jerk and press out by taghian to me. I would be surprise if he get white light in a official competition
