Kianoush Rostami 179kg Snatch + 217kg Clean and Jerk 2016 Olympic Games

August 13, 2016 By Gregor Winter

What a nerve wrecking session …

In the end it was Kianoush Rostami who won Gold with a World Record Total of 396kg.

179kg Snatch Video

217kg Clean & Jerk Video

85-scoreboard-

Big surprise for me was Sincraian, who looked like he can front squat 500kg.

Well, I guess sleep is out of the question for a couple of hours. Tian Tao had me on my feet for his last CJ. Rostami deserved the win! I was also very Impressed by Sincraian, only 6/6 lifter and looked very solid.

I guess we can all agree that Tao’s squat jerk is fairly inconsistent (or is he just inconsistent at the big meets in general?) but when he lands it is HUGE. Amazing athlete either way.

and at Rostami’s bodyweight…almost the lightest guy in the class?????

At what point do China reevaluate their decision to squat jerk?

I think some lifters just never adapt to the split jerk and thus stay with the power or squat jerk. The chinese lifters have the mobility, but strictly from a technique stand point the split jerk is superior in terms of efficiency and stability.
However, the chinese lifters are by far not the only ones that clean the weight easily just to lose the weight in the jerk.

Tao has said that he tried split jerking and was around 15kg ish weaker.

This is not a valid point for a lifter at this stage. As mentioned in other comments, Tian’s coaches have tried to have him switch to split jerks but that didn’t work out well for him at all.
He’s just gonna have to go with whatever that’s gonna give him the best chance at being in contention for medals.
Perhaps, if you’re referring to switching to the power jerk instead of the squat jerk, maybe…

You just can’t overstate the importance of the clean and jerk! So far, every person from Long Qingquan to Rostami has won by winning at the clean and jerk. Whenever someone bet that someone else couldn’t make the last big clean and jerk, he lost, whether it was Om or Ismaylov or Lu or Tian Tao. Worked for Ilya every time too. Still can’t believe Om lost the clean and jerk outright.

Meng Suping is China’s last gold medal (sorry, Yang Zhe), tallying 5, assuming nothing crazy happens (which isn’t a safe assumption at all in Brazil).

The importance of the clean and jerk is simply because it is the last lift. Reverse the order of the two lifts and you would have the advantage for the snatch specialists instead. Very few go for broke on the first lift type, and the competition is still very open, you do not know that it is a make or break lift. Randomize the order of the lifts for every competition maybe…

looool Tian Tao won silver going 2/6 on his lifts. He could best rostami if only he weren’t so damn inconsistent.

I think Rostami has his number and will always take exactly what is needed to beat Tao on a last attempt.
Most people are forgetting Rostami is the “new” current WR holder with 220CJ and 396 total and could snatch 175-180ish any day of the week.

he’s legit. Seems that mentally he’s locked in now.

Sincrain effortlessly cleaned all of his attempts as if he were lifting an empty bar, he probably should’ve gone for somewhere between 218-220

is it just me or does it seems when Lu or Tao does a crazy weight for the snatch, they become inconsistent in the clean and jerk. it’s like they have exhausted themselves with the snatch.

Lu is 31 and looked a lot more worn down now compared to his performance in Paris 2011 & London so I’d give him some credit for his 5/6 performance.
Tian has no excuse and still has a bad habit with his snatch technique. Maybe they should consider going back to power jerk if it helps on his consistency as he jerked it quite high.

Sincraian performance is utter madness, from 202 during the Europeans to 217 without breaking a sweat? Ulanov got upstaged real good.

Are there any videos of Tian’s performance?

  10. vlad says

It seemed Tian Tao had some issues with chest pain or something like that for the first 2 C&Js. He has also this tremendous strength and power, he almost power cleaned and then power jerked 217kg. Being able to push that high, maybe he will be much more consistent with power jerk? At least famous power jerkers are not known to experience permanent consistency problems.

As a side note, those rules for Olympic content distribution are really absurd for the Internet age. Not only we have to go through hacks and workarounds for the live streams but any recordings from the event are practically unavailable to find even if you want to pay for that, which is ridiculous.

I have just found that polish national tv has past recordings available. Try to get polish IP and search for: “sport tvp rio”. On the webpage select in “dyscypliny” -> “podnoszenie ciezarow”, then “wideo” and look for “finały”.

the lifter decides his style of jerk. there’s obvious reasons as to why they choose squat jerk/power over split. one lifter for example is apti aukhadov
