Meanwhile in Iran …
Here is a 220kg Clean & Jerk by Kianoush Rostami (2kg above the current 85kg world record).
The 22 year old is still filling the 85kg spot on the Iranian team (along with Rasoul Taghian now, who moved up from 77kg).
220kg is also a weight he has lifted at 85kg in competition before (Iranian competition in June 2012).
Currently the Iranian team is in Hungary for a 2 week training camp.

Looked solid, wonder how much he weighs here. Looking forward to the worlds this year, many exciting lifters (hopefully) to watch.
Jean Vikon says
you mean olympics!
Tom Bennett says
I read (on here I think) that he doesn’t even cut weight for competition!!!
logicalfellac says
Yeah, I think that was from an interview after the 2014 WWC. Markov was seriously impressed (as was probably anyone who’d heard about it, I guess.) haha
But it’s been a while since then, so perhaps he’s gained some weight.
Anton Mårtensson says
Apti is moving up to the 94. so he will have to challenge Ilya’s 233 world record.
Jerker Karlsson says
I don’t really see what Apti Aukhadov has to do with this post, but it’s going to be interesting to see him lift against Adrian Zielinsky in 94, if both are moving up. In 85, I look forward to see Okulov, Maligov, Markov, the two Iranians and possibly some others battle it out. And imagine the 105 with Nurudinov, Ilyin, possibly Aramnau and Demanov, and maybe later a return of either Akkaev or Klokov (or both).
I have a hard time seeing that any 94 can touch Ilyin’s CJ record at the worlds, but who knows…
I do hope we will see most of the lifters mentioned above appear at the worlds this year.
bert says
there’s still polovnikov who will be fighting to earn a place in the 105’s for Russia, and Pat Mendes/Ian Wilson are gonna hopefully try to make an appearance at worlds maybe? just speculation, but this year looks like it will have an incredible lineup
Jerker Karlsson says
Forgot about Polovnikov. Would be interesting to see what he and Mendes could do in an official competition this year.
drarara says
polovnikov moved to US and is looking to get rezident visa or smth so he wont participate in nationals. also apti did not move up.
Aldr says
These are two year old comments, back from when Apti was intending to move up etc
Beto says
Mendes is out of competition until 2023.
jakele says
i have a hard to believing Mendes should be a part of any conversation. When is the last time he competed and put up a total in competition?
Tom Bennett says
I don’t think Apti is gonna break 233kg at 94kg. It would be amazing if he did. He’s one hell of a lifter.
behrouz says
Superheavy weight would be very interesting with Salimi, Albegov, Lovchev and Moulaei as well
Tom Bennett says
seriously strong…
Ivan Bista says
I dont care if Apti or Adrian are no longer there, the 85 still remains my favorite class. Good to see Rostami didnt lose any of his cnj “talents” ))
logicalfellac says
Wow I forgot how relatively young he is. Still only 24. I’m hoping for an intense battle in Rio.
Beto says
Does anyone knows about Salimi rehab?
Artur09 says
Two months ago he started training. So far his results are far from the medal zone.
PJ says
Just for info, Rostami is training individually in Tehran, while the rest of the team including Salimi are in another city in North west of the country. Rostami actually publishes this video to show training individually wasn’t a mistake and he is better without coach !
Denissssss says
What about Behdad? Is his knee OK? And do Asian Games count as a qualification event, or he has to participate at Iran Grand Prix?
PJ says
There is not so much update about him, they tried to keep everything behind the doors, but it seems he started heavy training few weeks ago, and he is hopeful about good results in Rio. as far as I know Asian Games does count for him but they are not aware of this and he will participate in Iran GP, but most probably with very low results.
wlift84 says
>do Asian Games count as a qualification event
Yes.
Johnnyed says
Personally i think rostami is stronger than tian tao and obviously has a way better chance in ensuring a medal. However, in terms of breaking the world record i’d pick tian tao’s chances despite of his inconsistency’s because (to me) rostami doesn’t seem to be able to control the weight (swerving and dropping the bar behind him).
Realist says
I would agree that Rostami is more consistent while Tian Tao has a better chance of hitting super high numbers but I think that’s because Tian Tao is stronger. This video shows a really strong and solid clean by Rostami, the best I’ve seen of him I think. But if you look at Tian Tao’s cleans, they are effortless at any weight (220 included, several times) and so smooth. No (obvious) hop forward/backwards, doesn’t let it drive him too deep, always stays with the rhythm and stands up effortlessly. I think that shows his strength superiority over any 85 out there. And to the best of my knowledge, Rostami’s max is 221 while Tian Tao has done 225.
Anyway, does anyone know what body weight this is at? Rostami seems a lot stronger than before.
Leviathar says
I am pretty sure that he made 220 in training while weighting 85 kg, Rostami.
Realist says
Where did you hear that from? That makes no sense for Rostami to be training at competition weight. Usually, the only people who do that are those who are still filling out into the weight class and that’s not Rostami.
Easternhammer says
Rostami started his career as a 77. I believe he took a bronze medal at the 2010 Worlds. Maybe he hit 220 while moving up-after all, by 2011 Worlds he made a really good WR attempt.
Realist says
I think he actually started as a 69. Regardless of his old attempts, I was asking what his weight was on this 220 in this current thread because his clean looks much easier than before. He’s certainly not under 85kg here.
GHM says
Here is 220 during Fajr Meet before Rio.
