Kianoush Rostami 221kg Clean and Jerk

November 24, 2015 By Gregor Winter

Meanwhile in Iran…

Kianoush Rostami (85kg, Iran) posts a 221kg Clean and Jerk to his instagram. At a press conference after winning the World Championships in 2014 he said he had done 220kg before. Hopefully we’ll see more footage like this as competition draws closer.

Would that be a ‘no lift’ , because of the first dip?

      Yes.

But the bar didn’t hit the eyes level, no lift anyway?

It clearly was an attempt to jerk as I see it, so it probably should have been red-lighted. I am very impressed he managed to jerk it on the second try though, incredible power.

From what I’ve seen he usually flicks his elbows before attempting a jerk, I don’t think this was a re-grip.

Rules for the Clean and Jerk regarding re-gripping and jerk attempts:

Before the Jerk, the athlete may adjust the position of the barbell for the
          following reasons:
          a) to withdraw or “unhook” the thumbs
          b) if breathing is impeded
          c) if the barbell causes pain
          d) to change the width of the grip
The barbell adjustments noted above are not considered to be an additional
          attempt at the Jerk.

2.5.4 Incorrect movements for the Jerk

2.5.4.1 Any apparent effort to jerk which is not completed; including, lowering the
          body or bending the knees.
