Meanwhile in Iran …
So the rumors turned out to be true on this one.
Head coach Sajjad Anoushiravani announced that Kianoush Rostami is no longer part of the national team. (via and via)
Reason: Not taking part in training camps.
He has been self coached since the time before Rio. So obviously getting into competition shape on his own is not a problem for the 2016 Olympic champion.
I’m guessing this will be fixed until worlds later this year when they need his medals. The upcoming competitions aren’t just important enough for him.
Maybe someone can translate the announcement video?
Realist says
LOL I don’t believe it. It’s an announcement made to make his opponents like Tian Tao, Okulov, Markov (coming back this year) get too comfortable.
Juice says
I thought Markov was given a lifetime ban due to two positives?
Gregor says
He got 18 months. His ban ended 19.09.2016 https://www.allthingsgym.com/weightlifting-news-11-bulgarian-weightlifters-test-positive-for-stanozolol/

AAAAAAAAAA. Pardon my excitement, but AAAAAA 😀
My favourite lifter after Rybakou retired is back you mean? How did I miss this.

With this news Markov is the favorite in 2017, the rest of the good 85s will be (country) banned.
Realist says
Unless they pull a back-to-back team ban like Azerbaijan LOL

Rostami trained on his own and completely alone for Rio 2016. before the Olympics his medal was needed so they let him train on his own which is not a common thing in Iran at all. if you remember he had no coach on his corner at the Olympics, only the wrestling federation president and a masseur.
but now they made it clear if he wants to be a part of the national team he has to train with the team. they invited him to the camp but he didn’t show (unlike everybody else) now they are announcing he can’t be a part of national in upcoming tournaments including the Asian Championship (they probably didn’t even want to send him there) but there is still time for him to go to the camp if he wants to participate in the World Championships.
wlift84 says
Tangential, but there were three men with Rostami in Rio: Sohrab Moradi, Ali Moradi (IRIWF president) and one I don’t know by name (in his 40s, glasses).
PJ says
Sohrab Moradi had his own competition the next day, and he is not Rostami’s best friend to be there for him !! that was the masseur guy who looks like Sohrab a bit. the 3rd guy was one of IRIWF officials

Wait, I know the plot to this movie.
Szalai, Rezazadeh, Bagheri, Tavakoli were all booted/let go in recent years rather quickly. What are the chances Anoushiravani is still in charge next year when the Asian Games Gold is at stake and Rostami is “miraculously” back?
Everybody relax.
PJ says
Rostami’s problem is not with Anoush himself, he wants to train on his own, not under national team coach (no matter who is the coach)
personally I think he will show up in the national camp eventually.
