Lu Xiaojun 177kg Snatch World Record 2016 Olympic Games *Super Slow Motion!*

January 16, 2017 By Gregor Winter

Meanwhile in Rio …

That has to be one of the craziest weightlifting sessions ever, with this being one of the best lifts ever!

31 year old Lu Xiaojun snatches 177kg at 77kg! 100kg Over bodyweight!

Update 16.01.2017: 170, 175, 177kg Snatch Comparison!

Update 30.12.2016: Super Slowmo!

Lu Xiaojun (-77kg, @hookgripchn) snatching 177kg/390lb to break his own World Record and becoming, as far as we know, the 2nd person to snatch 100kg over bodyweight since the weight classes were originally reset in 1992. This was most likely his last snatch on an international competition platform — although he has said he will continue, his advancing age makes that somewhat unlikely!

202kg Clean & Jerk Video

Little did we know at this point that Nijat Rahimov was willing to Clean & Jerk whatever you put in front of him that day ….

Previously unreleased video of Lu Xiaojun (77kg, @hookgripchn) snatching 170kg, 175kg and 177kg to set a World Record at the 2016 Olympic Games! Who else is excited to see him return to int’l competition in a few weeks as an 81 at the 2018 WWC? —— Also it’s worth noting that, no, Lu is not too fast for slow mo. This video was not shot at a high frame rate so the glitches you’re seeing are computer generated artifacts resulting from having too few frames per second in the original video.

Also an amazing lift, Andranik Karapetyan’s 174kg Snatch on his 2nd attempt.

Lu’s 202kg Squat Jerk

32 year-old Lu Xiaojun (-77kg, @hookgripchn) clean and squat jerking 202kg/445lb to post a 379kg total (along with his 177kg world record snatch), just 1kg under his world record of 380kg from the 2013 WWC — and tying his gold medal total from the 2012 Olympics.

Just beautiful. Don’t know if he will retire after Rio, but anyway this is good for grand finale of the career of a weightlifting legend.

No, Nijat Rahimov was banned from 2013-2015. Lu Xiaojun has passed every drug test, including the surprise tests they sprung on him when he visited the US to do seminars with MA Strength.

beast lift by Nijat. still do not believe he should have gotten white lights for that lift.

He should have done this lift back in 2012 though, too bad they screwed up the timer for his 3rd attempt.

Yh I was thinking the same thing when I saw his reaction, especially considering he was all smiles after he failed 177 kg last year at worlds. It must be that he’s under such immense pressure to perform on the olympic stage, that he no longer feels that same enjoyment. I think this pressure got to Lu in the C & J too, because the 202 kg attempt he made looked like quite a strain, especially considering he made 207 kg like nothing at Chinese nationals back in April this year.

Doesn’t look like he caught it perfectly, I think the strain of saving it a little caused the look

Just wait a couple of years at most and he may be declared champion when Rahimov is disqualified and his world record nullified for the use of PED’s. It is a sad state of affairs when one has to think in those terms. Just wish that blood tests could be done really quick because until eight years pass, the medals are just on loan.

Some of you know that Oleg Perepechenov did 177.5 in a Russian national meet some years ago and looked good for 220 when he jerked 210 at 77. In the “Bulgarian years” of the previous 75 class, emphasis was on advancing the jerk. It seemed as if the limit of potential was reached and newer lifters sought to improve the snatch. This they did. However Stoichkov and Varbanov, jerk stars, snatched 94.63% as much as this 177 (167.5) and that percent is narrowed more due to they were 2kg lighter. There is something drastically wrong when the second place lifter in 77 at 2016 Olympics has a mere 25KG gap between his very high snatch result and his jerk. And what is wrong isn’t his great leg strength, but his awfully flawed method of putting the weight overhead and standing with it in the completed position. He need not have been pushed to second place. He and his coaches had lots of time to correct this folly and did not. One other note about Stoichkov in 1984 at Varna. His 210 really looked good for 220, yes I know that does not count. All he wanted to do was enough for a WR. “It was too damn easy” as Mr. Pettibone said to Chaney in Bronson’s 1975 movie “Hard Times.” Compare also that the 214 jerk of the 77kg winner in Rio had his legs very tightly covered in lifting gear, while Stoichkov didn’t even have on knee wraps. Try your best squat both ways. Without leg gear (tight pants to the knee and knee wraps) you find at least a 10% decrease. Stoichkov and Varbanov are still the best jerk lifters in the 75-76-77 range.

The thing is it’s not that easy just to fix a technical problem like that. He’s obviously not for split jerk and also not strong enough to do power jerk. Now I am not for the squat jerk at all – I think it’s just for athletes who can’t do better – but you gotta respect Lu for being such a force for years and also his snatch is one of the best in history. Awesome lifter that’s for sure. I always liked the Varbanov kind of guys with a big cnj but don’t forget: it’s about a total of the two discipline and it really doesn’t matter if the difference between the two is smaller. He’s got older of course and that affects the cnj.

Happy New Year to all weightlifting fans around the world and specifically to Gregor for this great site..

Excellent post. I suggest Lu’s form is similar to Mohamed Traboulsi. His snatch form can be seen at following site, http://liftup.chidlovski.net/liftup/l_athleteResult.asp?a_id=278. I remember seeing his snatch form in 1970 worlds (gold in snatch?). He was horrible at C&J. It is a bit strange that Turkish (non Bulgarian origin) lifters are not usually as good in C&J vs snatch. Azerbaijani lifters with Bulgarian coaches got better in C&J but we know what happened to their team.

Now that I show my age, I would like to point to older fans on this page that Mr. Chidlovski managed to find results of 1967 Little Olympic results on his page, http://www.chidlovski.net/blog/index.php/2016/12/17/forgotten-tournament-of-1967/. This tournament replaced the one and only weightlifting world that was canceled after WWll.
