Hi, I run ATG.
Follow me on instagram @gregorwinter (and ATG @atginsta).

very impressive. but what really counts is not in russian training camp, but on international competition stage..
Vitaly says
Funny how in order to C&J 212kg on the stage, this guy needs to clean 243kg in the gym. All jokes aside I blame his squat jerking.
Leviathar says
But remember not everyone can split jerk, i can power jerk 125 kg but will press out a 100 split jerk, maybe squat jerk is risky but wonder what he can power jerk?
Mr_Rogers413 says
My push press is within a few KGs of my split jerk so you’re not alone Leviathar.
Magneto says
The clean is only 50% of C&J, so why are connecting it with his squat jerk? The reference is his 233 kg C&J in training. He lost 20 kg on the platform. That is much weight, but it has happened before with other lifters (reasons being obvious). Squat jerking is risky and the least reliable of the three jerk styles – no doubt. But there can be no doubt too, that he is unable to split jerk even close to 233 kg. Safe split jerks with 200 or risky squat jerks with 220 –> you choose the second option, if you want to achieve anything remarkable. 6 out of 6 is nice for recreational athletes. Champions need to aim higher.
mrtn86 says
he is young, he has so much strength and i think he also has a solid technique in split-jerking. do you think it would be possible to change to the safer style of split-jerking?
what are the heaviest jerks without split-technique? maybe bedzhanian? but he doesnt squat jerk..
Magneto says
Of course he can change. We have witnessed that on professional level with Apti Aukhadov (and he switched to a more difficult style). Although I think that the general assumption has to be that professional athletes use the style that they are the most successful with.
To be honest .. if Marcel Guidea can safely split jerk 230 he must be dumb to use the squat jerk. I assume he and his coaches see no chance in putting in the effort to train the split jerk. Like I said “better a slight chance at gold than an assured bronze”.
However I like to stress that this is my own point of view and can be bullshit. In this context: Someone needs to ask him right away 🙂 Every power/squat jerker had to do that and explain himself *g*
Heaviest jerk without split that I know of is 241 from Bedzhanyan. Although arguably not a “true” squat jerk the heaviest one is 237 by Bedzhanyan as well.
wlift84 says
Guidea was very close to a 225 C&J at last year’s Euro Juniors. That means he had the strength for it AND the coaches were confident to pass testing as such, which he did.
Testing decreases results yes, but I’m convinced this wasn’t the deciding factor here. I think the Russians were just arrogant with their attempts.
Magneto says
Good points. I wasn’t refering to PEDs in particular to be honest. In my eyes, obvious reasons besides that are: overweight, more attempts, no pressure, familiar environment, “having a good day” etc. People are forgetting about these things when comparing competition vs. training results.
percypig says
He’s 20 years old and is youth world champion, euro youth champion, silver junior world medalist and that was before he swapped to a completely new country and became junior euro champion and silver junior world medalist.
His best on international stage is 219kg not 212kg. There’s an overwhelming amount of people who do their best lifts in training not competition, this is nothing new, what’s wrong in appreciating a good training lift?
Vitaly says
If Marcel would perform the same way back in the USSR days, 2015 Junior worlds would be his last Int. competion, I can assure you that.
The problem is that he kind of halfassed on the stage and didn’t fight for gold. This situation is unacceptable for a government funded athlete.
Being a russian myself, I hold our athletes to a higher standard, considering almost all of them are getting paid out of the taxpayer’s money.
Sergeyevich says
I’m disappointed with his performance aswell but lets not forget his performance at the youth euro’s too soon.
mrtn86 says
“There’s an overwhelming amount of people who do their best lifts in training not competition”
…definitely not in every country 😉
kjust88 says
Needless to say, 219 kg is 94% of 233 kg. Of course you want to it your best lift on the plateform. But he is not the first, nor the last to hit in the 90-95% in a competition, use of “super” supplements or not, over confidence of the coach or not. Plus, he is probably overweight in all his training video (which is normal)
koker says
He got elbow injury right before worlds, thats why results is low. Lovchev had same trouble at 2013 worlds.
ReginaldHarper says
This is probably the first time I’ve seen that pronounced of a bounce off the shoulders at the *bottom* position of a clean.
