Meanwhile in Poland …
Ilya Ilyin is currently training in the Polish training hall, which you might remember from the “Siodme Poty” videos (Olympic Sports Center in Spala).
Marcin Dolega is also training currently training there. He gets a 190kg Snatch and 225kg C&J.
On the European championships start list he is listed with a 405kg total (2nd highest behind Aramnau).
Oh, and in the Ilya gets a 160kg Snatch and 195kg Clean + Front Squat + Jerk.
Update: Ilya comments on his Squat depth in the video. Thanks to Sergiy we have a translation:
He said that a lot of people comment that he squats too high. He said that he has a lot of experience, so he squats as low as he feels like. He tells that you don’t have to squat super low if you can’t. Parallel squats are ok, above parallel are not.
Update 12.04.2014: Marcin got 4th overall at the 2014 Europeans (192+230)

What happened with Kolecki? Is he banned due a failed drug test?
lifting says
he grew old and couldn’t lift much anymore
Struan says
He retired due to knee injuries. He’s now head of the Polish weightlifting federation.
guest says
Kolecki got wasted by his original trainer. He went through almost 25 competitions in a four year period (1998-2001) and his body reacted as you would expect. He was never the same after this.
grobpote says
I don’t think 25 competitions in four years would be too much.He just got up to the top too early and he paid the price for it.17-18 years old joints couldn’t take that kind of loads. Ilya does it better by not turning up every year,so he can rest and might last longer therefore.
Castro says
Milo had a nice article about Szymon when he was World Junior Champion , Bulgarian methodology was used near competition although off-season the russian method was employed. I think one of his coaches was a follower of Abadjiev’s methods, with the expected results, short career. Ivan Grikovi(sp?) was his coach before 2001 worlds and looking at the ironmind’s dvd,he didn’t seem to have trained much that year.Shame he got such a short career, amazing lifter
grobpote says
He was absolutely amazing, yes. And using bulgarian – lots of singles, big weights – before comp, and russian for preparation sounds quite reasonable. Maybe it was his trainer’s fault but let’s be honest: he was unique with his ability to become mature so early and he took part in 3 olympic games. I mean lots of lifter can’t do that. He finished – compared to others – very early his career but he started it early as well. The injury part : well unfortunately everything has a price. They could have been more careful with him but I am not sure he would have lifted much longer. Ilya does it better with the annoying long breaks and rare appearances but I’m not sure his career will last so long too.
Leon says
Given that most lifters of that kaliber lift much less frequently it seems really a lot. Look at Ilin. He didn’t lift for almost a year after the olympics. A. Ivanov said in an interview that at world class level three major competitions per year are already a lot. Most lift actually less often.
Interesting is also the training of Ilin. Not much in terms of quantity, but rather going for quality. Quite similar to the training of Reza, who’s training session was described with about ten lifts per exercise. So he did around ten reps in the snatch, the clean and jerk and in the squat. Makes sense when you lift so much.
jakele says
Im not so sure i agree with you regarding Ilya’s volume. His recent videos show him taking what looks like 8 Triples in the snatch as well as complexes on the CJ. Volume looks plenty high to me.
Leon says
Alright. It was just my impression after this one. I guess we won’t see the fruit of his work before the WC in 2015.
Andres says
So sad his history. Insane, insane talent, 232.5 and 182.5 snatch before he was 20, 235 clean in comp at 18 (!) and could never win worlds. my favourite lifter for sure, still breaks my heart to watch his failed clean in the 2000 og where he got played by kakhi.
kriters says
He did 235kg on polish nationals in 2000
pet says
his brother is tested positve in german bundesliga
BaseBoss says
Test positive Sylwester Kolecki, brother Szymon Kolecki, no Dolega.
guest says
As for Dolega, he’s a victim of his own ego. Internationally he almost always gets only one good snatch or bombs entirely. That’s where he’s missing kilos. London Olympics instead of going e.g. 180-185-190 he starts very high and right out of the gate has no confidence left after the first miss (see also 2013 WWC). Bejing too, instead of building kilos he goes after the WR and loses the podium in the process.
Also in 2010, while he won he was entirely lucky because Smorchkov got totally robbed.
Although at his level you obviously have to be on the verge of arrogance, he comes across as very cocky and I’m not a fan.
Leon says
I can’t say anything about his character, but I agree concerning his poor choice of attempts. I suppose he could have won many more titles with better tactics. Very pitty.
justice says
Of course you don’t have idea, that in Poland (WWC2013) he was injured and he couldn’t for two week before, he had injured muscles of stomach, also in Beijing he had injured knee, so in my opinion he only failed in London, but i heard that he was snatching 205 or 200 about two weeks before compiting in London so we he shouldn’t start form 190? He just had a bad day 😉 Why always Klokov and Klokov… ;>
kriters says
I don’t think Dołęga would be competing in 105. If he will it would be +105. He was 114 on 15th of March.
Clarence Kennedy says
He always trains at that bodyweight
aguy says
Does anyone know what Ilya is saying at the end? I think it may have something do with his squat depth and how he increases it with each set. Just a guess though.
Sergiy says
He said that a lot of people comment that he squats too high. He said that he has a lot of experience, so he squats as low as he feels like. He tells that you don’t have to squat super low if you can’t. Parallel squats are ok, above parallel are not.
aguy says
Thanks. I thought he was talking about that because I do see a lot of comments about his not so deep squatting, which is ridiculous. It’s like telling Stephen Curry he releases the ball too quickly. Some people.
Jay Blais says
illya vs aramnau…………do want
A. Rodriguez says
Why is it that Ilya Ilyn is criticized for training with parallel squats instead of deep squats. As to the effectiveness of that training, have any one seen him struggling coming up from a squat clean? The world record in London should be enough proof that he is correct in his training. Parallel squat does not hurt the knees or stretches the tendons or ligaments, therefore, less risk of injuries. Combined with front squats and it is enough, unless your technique is too mediocre to benefit from that training. As a light-heavy in the mid 1970’s I trained that way; I could parallel squat 220 kilos and could stand up with 182 kg in the front squat. That translated to 172.5 kg clean in training at about 184 lbs body weight. I did parallel squats because of knee injuries with deep squats as a rookie that left my knees prone to injury. As long as the parallel squat is performed with the bar placed just like in a deep squat, to exert more force around the knees instead of the hips, there is no need to go deeper than parallel. Just look at Ilyn’s legs and their strength. Think outside the box and adjust the training to your physique type and basic skills. As for Dolega, he is basically done making any further progress, his best opportunity was in Beijing for a medal and London was his golden chance and he wasted that. Father time is not forgiving and not everyone can be a Rudolf Pluckfelder and win the Olympics at 36 y/o (Tokyo ’64), specially today when elite lifters max out in the late teen’s or early 20’s instead of five or six years later like in the 1960’s and 1970’s. There is still a faint possibility for him but it is getting fainter and fainter for an Olympic medal or any color to further validate his career, not just his 3 world championships.
