Meanwhile in Estonia …
While he was still recovering from the shoulder injury (+ surgery) he suffered during his 246kg C&J at Worlds, Mart Seim decided to boost his leg strength a little.
The Result: 350kg x5!
Right now his shoulder is almost back to normal and he starts to increase weight in the classical exercises.
Watch again: THE Best Squat Video of 2014 – Mart’s 320kg x10.
Update: Mart Squatted 400kg!
Victor says
This is more than what even Salimi can do, isn’t it?
Everett says
Salimi’s not much of a squatter. I mean, he’s a SHW weightlifter, so he can outsquat most mortals, but it’s no so much compared to other elite weightlifters or powerlifters. Several top PLers are now hitting numbers of 400, 410, 415 even without knee wraps, so Salimi’s 360×1 in a belt, not quite below parallel, is not so impressive. But as someone above says–this sport isn’t squatting! It’s weightlifting.
Seim’s power is insane, however!
Roberto says
I think that Iranians don’t do such things like sets of five. They stay only with singles and doubles.
Gregor says
They do.
Talked to Hossein Tavakoli at Junior Worlds.
He said that Rezazadeh did 370 or 380 (on a regular bar as much as he could fit) for a super, super easy set of 5 or 6, they weren’t even counting.
Also he said Rezazadeh did a 450kg back squat on a powerlifting bar.
Other numbers: Front Squat 340kg
Clean & Jerk: 270 like a joke, never tried more due to risk of injury.
Also I think nobody really knows what Salimi can squat. We have only seen a couple of videos and from those you cannot make a judgement.
Everett says
I will believe a 450 back squat when I see it. For some reason, all the legendary strength training numbers supposedly done in training never have a way of making it into the world of verifiable video footage. It could have happened, but such claims that sound quite inflated just don’t seem supported by other videos I’ve seen of the Iranian team. I think probably they just like to talk big. 🙂

He looks good for 10 rep…
Sanjay says
Yes, Victor, it is more than what Salimi can do – which indicates that performance in weightlifting is not influenced by leg power alone.
I always found it interesting that Aleksandr Kurlovich (400 kg squat) and Anatoly Pisarenko (290 kg squat) had the same results in weightlifting.
dustin oranchuk says
pisarenkos max back squat was NOT 290. Front squat maybe. Your point is still valid though
Leon says
Vasily Alexeyev also never squatted much above his best Clean and Jerk that is around 270 or 280. I think he stated that it was a waste of time and energy to develop the squat so much above the results in the competition lifts.
mrtn86 says
quote from the link above:
“Anatoly Pisarenko had a result of between 280 – 290 kgs in the back squat and a clean and jerk of 262.5 kgs. On this subject of “big back squats” and “big lifts”, Alexander Kurlovich (12), said he witnessed Pisarenko miss a squat of 260 kgs in training; only to clean and jerk it 5 days later. According to Taranenko, “if he (Pisarenko) had to stop at the bottom of a clean, he would not be able to get up”(11).”
wlift84 says
Kurlovich never squatted 400. He told A. Charniga a best of 350.
