Back Extensions / Hyperextensions have been covered quite a bit here on ATG.
A favorite among lifters who also often mention in Interviews when it comes to lower back health and recovery.
Below is a video of how Oleksiy Torokhtiy likes to perform them.
More: Watch Dmitry Klokov’s Hyperextensions with 80kg here.
Translation / Summary: from Sergiy.
He never uses more than 20 kg. Goes up fast, pauses, goes down slowly.
He also mentions that he goes side to side at the end without weight (you can see it in the video).

I’ve always wondered about these barbells I often see in Russian videos that have those spiraled grooves on the sleeves. I’ve never seen these in the US, and I was wondering if someone could tell me about them: what the function of the grooves are.

Cheap spinlock barbells

Makes the bar easier to load, less friction. Cheap bar used for strength and accessory work.

The old Vostok barbell. We had it too. The grooves where you could secure the plates. The collars were different. There was a moving part – which went in the groove – strained by a spring.

If i am not mistaken did not Alexeev do hyperextensions with
over 200 kg. ? What about the GHR (glute ham raise) ?
From what i understand the Soviets would do this on
a pommel horse with stall bars to secure the feet.
Charlie says
Huh? His best competition snatch was 190KG. The snatch has way more resistance possibility than the amount of weight in a hyperextension.
