I’ve been looking for this for a while now…
Thanks to Nat from HookGrip we get to see the video of Om Yun Chol’s Clean & Jerk World Record (beating Halil Mutlu’s 168kg from 2001).
169kg at 56kg bodyweight! Triple (+) Bodyweight at age 21!
Happened last month at the 2013 Asian Interclub Senior Weightlifting Championships Pyongyang, North Korea. And yes, this is an official world record. This was an IWF sanctioned meet.
Update: at the 2013 Worlds he went 124, 127, x130 in the Snatch and 162, x170 in the C&J.
On his 170kg attempt, he dislocated his elbow. Still he is 2013 World Champion.
- Here is the recording of the 56kg (Om vs. Long only)
- All other recordings will be linked on the 2013 Worlds Page
Update: On Eurosport David Goldstrom said it was a ligament tear.
Update 20.09.2014: He set a new World Record with 170kg at the 2014 Asian Games.
PS: Here is a clip from today’s (20.10.2013) worlds training hall with him in it.

First CJ attempt: 155. Second attempt: World record?
David Oliveira says
A shame that he injured himself today…those 170 were not out of his reach.

I was amazed as I saw how he dislocated his elbow and, still, managed to WALK down to the warm-up area. I bet it must be his military education (military programmation, most likely), but this was a great display of bravery.
Anyhow, this was kind of expected, looking at the numbers he was putting up in competition (and, most likely, in training as well).
Bowe says
he was expected to dislocate his elbow?
Ivan Bista says
Maybe not expected to dislocate elbow, but I kinda agree with Lurker. I thought he wasnt totally focused on the 170kg lift (but maybe its just my stupid view), maybe got carried away by the atmosphere (North Koreans were really great in the audience!). Anyway.I wish him fast recovery.
Tom Bennett says
What’s up with all the North Koreans wearing white shirts and ties…haha
