As somebody who has never used either, is there a major difference between knee wraps (like those Mark Henry wore setting his record total 20 years ago) and what Williams uses for his squat? They still look like they’re supporting his knees pretty well given how he approaches the bar.
Mike says
Yes, about 50kg difference.
everett says
The knee sleeves add virtually nothing. They are the same material that oly lifters use–just like rehbands or any other sleeve. I squat with them and wraps all the time.
everett says
…and while wraps add a ton, I can’t actually tell that knee sleeves add anything. Maybe 5 lbs, but honestly if it is warm in the gym, I don’t even use them and don’t notice a difference with bare knees.
Korea says
This is not world record total.These are some bigger totals without wraps-Eric lilliebridge(2353 lbs),Josh Morris (2300 lbs),Don Reinhoudt(2298 lbs),Konstantin KOnstantinovs(2261 lbs),Derek Kendall,Chad Smith and Stan Efferding(all 2226 lbs) etc.
Mike says
Biggest total in the only fed that matters.
Korea says
This feds world records are killing sport. The only records that matter are all time world records and this total is far from that!
everett says
It is still a world record in the IPF and to report it as anything else would be quite simply wrong. Also, there are no squats in any fed bigger than Ray’s.
There are no such thing as “all-time world records.” These are just lists kept by amateur powerlifting websites. They may be helpful in comparing feds, but they are not officially sanctioned, and they compare apples to orange since the feds are so wildly different in their standards.
Korea says
It can be called IPF record, not world record.World record means that you in the sport of powerlifting lifted more than any human ever. And this squat is actually world record, but total is far from that.I understand that sport is separated in too many federations, but calling someone a world record holder just because someone stronger than him didn’t compete at the same competition is funny.
Manotas says
You also must take in account, that the IPF is a WADA drug tested federation. All the other powerlifters that you mentioned compete on non drug tested federations.
Korea says
That drug tested(not drug free) and not “offseason” tested malversations are another story.
M says
IPF is the only fed that matters. It’s the powerlifting equivalent of the IWF. Every other fed is just a pretender.
Mike says
What M said. And yes they do OCTs. It’s deceptive to say “oh there’s so many feds” when it’s the only international fed of any real diversity in that it has members (and world champs) from all 6 inhabited continents. 8000 members in the US alone.
Mishima says
Quantity is not quality.
Mishima says
There is no powerlifting federation that matters, because we are not Olympic sport.
Mike says
IPF competes in the World Games and had an IOC officer in attendance at Classic Worlds. No other fed can claim that.
jamesbund says
On wikipedia it says they are in charge of the paralifting during the Olympics too.
Everett says
Well, then how about “IPF World Record?”
And yes, drug testing can be gotten around, but that doesn’t change the fact that the IPF is by far the most stringent fed to compete in.
mrtn86 says
incredibly strong. in my opinion the best squatter in the world.
and i think he has some more kilos in him..
Dg1893 says
people trying to discredit this lift and compare it to other federations need to relax.
