At the EPA European Championships of Powerlifting and Bench Press in Kiev, Ukraine, 26.04.2012, Shaloha Arkady totaled 742.5 kg, breaking Tony Conyers all-time raw (no knee wraps) world record of 714.5kgs by a whopping 28 kg. This is now the mark to beat at RUM 2013 for 75 kg competitors like Perryman, Nguyen, Conyers, and Jamie Lewis if he decides to compete at 75kg.

Damn he made that squat looked easy!
Joe says
Strong as hell but sumo just doesnt look as cool…
Jon Frough says
Doesn’t make him look less strong (as fuck) but sumo just isn’t as awesome as conventional.
Joe says
Agreed as well
Everett says
I agree that perhaps it doesn’t look as cool, but for the record I’m a PLer and I pull 272.5kgs conventional, but can only manage ~205kgs sumo.
GregorATG says
Interesting. Would you say the two are (almost) different exercises?
Everett says
I think they are comparable in the same way that one doesn’t differentiate between squats with different stances. Many people squat more with a narrow stance, but just about as many squat more with a wide stance–it just doesn’t look as different because your arms aren’t in the way. Most sumo pullers are still quite strong conventional–for example, Dan Green has an extremely wide sumo, and his best pull in a full meet is 360 kgs, yet on his YouTube he has videos of 347.5 x 2 done with a conventional stance. Also, when surveying the all-time WRs in powerlifting, the WRs are exactly 50/50 sumo and conventional–it doesn’t seem that one yields statistically greater results. The same could also be said for bench: Hoornstra benches 300kgs@110 with an extremely close grip, while others opt to go as wide as possible.
