This is another one of those ‘Women Everybody should squat’ posts.
I know this is preaching to the choir, but it bears repeating. As a woman you won’t get huge and bulky all of a sudden, only more awesome. Don’t be afraid of picking up weights.
Idea: We should have some kind of “get a girl to squat” day sometime in the near future. Good idea / bad Idea? Have you successfully taught a girl how to squat?
Anyway, here is Summer Krasinski. She placed placed 4th in the 75kg class at the 2012 USA National Championships and squats more than me :/
132kg x2
120kg Front Squat
Front Squat 90kg x8

Roy and Roar, she’s married to John Krasinski who runs The Anvil Athletics in Arizona, they have 2 kids. He’s a great guy who’s been involved in coaching d1 football since the 80s and 90s. I had the pleasure of training with and being coached by both of them and Alex Lee a few months ago.

Speaking as a trainer, it’s actually easier to get women squatting properly than it is men, women are more willing and able to lean it. There are a few reasons for this.
1. Generally with women in the gym, if it makes their arse and thighs hurt they feel good about it.
2. Women usually have better bodily awareness than men, so it’s easier to teach them new exercises. Men are less willing to accept instruction, since every time a man says, “I don’t know,” his penis shrinks one-sixteenth of an inch.
3. All of us tend to want to do more things we rock at, and avoid things we suck at. Men usually have relatively better upper body strength and so are attracted to bench press and curls and avoid squats and deadlifts, and women vice versa.
4. Men’s egos get mixed up in the weights they lift, and if you don’t really have the strength to lift some weight you can just reduce the range of motion. I’ve taught lots of men to squat, they might do 40-60kg deep on the first day, three months later I find them doing 80-90kg… quarter squats. Women on the other hand might do 30-50kg deep on the first day, and three months later will usually still be doing 30-50kg… but still deep. I prefer the latter, since squatting 40kg well is better than 80kg half-arsed, and it’s easier to persuade someone to put another 10kg on the bar than to teach them to squat properly all over again.
5. Depending on her other training and posture, a woman can have a nice-looking arse without squatting. But the squatless man is an arseless man. In general, men need squatting more than women. Just ask any woman.
Conclusion: Really we need a “teach men to squat” day, not women. I say this as a man, by the way.
Good points.
I was more going at the fact that a lot of woman currently don’t use compound exercises whereas men do.
Please show me this gym where lots of men use compound exercises other than bench press and the full-body curl.
Mine. When I’m there.
at my gym, barbell curls you
Summer has since squatted well over 300lbs for reps and still looks great doing it.
