Tian Tao and Kianoush Rostami pushing each other to a 400 kg total in Houston or Rio? One can hope… 🙂

This could’ve been the year for Ivan Markov

        Markov was suspended, unfortunately

Yes, would have been great if he had been eligible for Rio, but sadly he’s suspended.

News from Iran national camp is that Rostami is not in the top shape but they can lie! I am going with 178 + 210 = 388 +/- 3Kg for Rostami and 393+ kg for Tao if he manages 175-6 in snatch.

        My guess:

        Tian Tao: 170, 175 (or 176 if they want a total WR with 219), 180X + 210, 219 (50% success) so total 385-395

Rostami: 172 + 208 (Rostami’s much harder to guess cus he doesn’t have an obvious pattern like Tian Tao, but seeing him in a hospital bed 2 weeks before comp doesn’t scream incoming WR to me) = 380 total

I hope the Chinese coaches allow him to go for 219 in his second attempt, so he might have another go if he fails. This would make sense if he is too far behind after snatch or pretty safe at first place after his first clean&jerk.

Well, he went 210, 219, XX at the nationals cus even if you miss 219 the first time, you won’t have a decent chance of making it on the following lift due to exhaustion with just 2 minutes rest. Just like how Liao Hui cleaned and almost jerked 211 on his second lift but couldn’t even make a decent attempt on the third. Of course, if he lost focus or makes a balancing mistake very early and didn’t even clean it (so didn’t expend much energy) on the first attempt, the second could be a go. But in general, second or third lift, I say Tian Tao only has one shot per competition at 219.

Tian Tao, unless he’s injured, would have to have made some pretty serious mistakes at this point to be too far behind after the snatch; he shouldn’t be under 170 in any circumstance and it doesn’t look like anyone here is up for leaving 170 in the dust at this competition. Also, he has a pretty strong mind of his own; apparently, Tian Tao doesn’t like taking weights in between 210 and 219 LOL Says he can’t muster the excitement, but I bet if he could take a gold medal with 215, he’d be up for it.

              Chinese play mind games
That 211 last year by tian tao looked as if he failed it on purpose

                November 5, 2015 at 20:36

LOL Totally. He also failed 219 on purpose, once in the 2014 WWC and then again at the 2015 Chinese nationals so everyone’s guard is totally off for what he’s about to do in Rio hahaha

No, it’s a shame he had to undergo an operation so close to the competition. But there’s always Rio. 🙂

You never know though, Okulov or Aukhadov could be in top form. Okulov made a good attempt at 218 kg last year I think.

Is there any advantage in doing this with smaller plates? I mean, is bar whip a thing in the snatch?

    • Victor says

      November 4, 2015 at 17:04

I think it’s just that in competition, loaders load the bar legally, but in training, there are no loaders and the lifters have to spend their time and energy loading their own weights so if you want 20kg more, you’d rather just put another green on each side rather than spend your strength taking the thing apart to strip off a yellow and add a red in its place. You especially don’t feel like doing that if you’re about to attempt some big lifts.

Bar whip is not that helpful in the snatch due to wider grip, causing less bar whip and because people usually have a wealth of residual strength for standing up with even a max snatch weight (unless there was a massive struggle to balance it, in which case bar whip couldn’t help you anyway).
