Meanwhile in at the 2017 Chinese Nationals …
Tian Tao showed that he is in top clean and jerk shape!
221kg Clean & Jerk (unofficial world record weight!) after taking 190 and 206, to surpass Kianoush Rostami’s official 220kg world record.
He snatched 155 and 164, skipping his third attempt. Full Recording is on the 2017 Chinese Nationals page.

Wow. Hopefully he continues on this path.

Really good at UNOFFICIAL WR’s (eye-roll). Where the feck was this in Rio? Who lifts more at a National games selection event 6 months later than at the actual Olympics???
Long Qingquan is da man! 137+170 when it counts; 120+150 when it doesn’t LOL

I’m quite shocked that you’re knocking on him for that performance in Rio.
That’s usually what happens when the competition is close and stakes are high; unless you’re so far ahead of the competition, your attempts are going to be conservative as you’re going to be fighting for the last 1, 2 kilos.
Just think about all the circumstances at Nationals vs. Rio.
Here, he’s already won the thing with ease, so there was 0 pressure on Tian’s part. Of course, if he feels good, he’d go for a massive attempt like 221.
In Rio, he was on the verge of bombing out! It was a do or die situation for him to make that 217 (which, btw, is still an extremely high number).
Soon enough, he’s going to be taking some more WR’s.

I am very very well aware that Rio was a much more stressful environment and that’s a big part of the game: performance under stress. 2014 worlds, 2015 worlds, 2016 Olympics; he has been extremely inconsistent even with lower weights whenever the stakes were high but performed marvelously when they were low at home. Between Houston and Rio, he made 1 out of 6 clean and jerks, failing 210-211 five times in a row!! (For the record, from 2014 to now, he has attempted the 210-211 weight 7 times in international comp and failed all 7. I would recommend his coach never ever giving him that weight again. He is only able to make lower than 205 or higher than 217 when under stress.) For a guy who lifts 225 in training and 220 at the nationals (with excellent consistency, always 2 for 3 or 3 for 3 at home), this is completely unacceptable. That’s a huge problem for him and I more than anyone hope he can overcome it. I even suggested that maybe his coach needs to adjust the competition strategy for someone like him who is no more consistent with light weights than heavy ones (ie maybe just open with whatever it takes to win and if he fails, skip the second lift to buy resting time, then try again on the third). However until he/they overcome this problem, I find it very difficult to become excited by his unofficial WR’s because he is basically a different person lifting at home than he is lifting internationally.

Wow. I wasn’t aware that it was THAT bad. Now that I know that, I get your point. It’s frustrating to see him do so poorly on the international stage where it matters the most. ’14 and ’15 worlds were huge disappointments for sure.
Given those bomb outs, the fight he put up in Rio was still a clutch performance imo.
I also heard from somewhere (perhaps it was you?!) that he has a mental problem of not being psyched enough unless 210+ is loaded on the bar for the C&J. I think the issues with him has been mental + techniques, and I’m hoping he’s cleared up both issues.
Realist says
Correct, that’s what he said at an interview. He says he can’t get mentally psyched up for lower weights. And I didn’t believe him at the time but now, it looks like he wasn’t just talking to sound tough. It seems 205 is low enough for him to lift even without being psyched up but 210 requires some mental vigor. That’s why the traditional ramp-up (210, 215, 220) won’t work for him. For him, that 210 safety lift has less of a chance of being successful than the 220 glory lift. So I recommend for him that they skip the “safety” and go straight for the gold or WR. At least don’t come out until your nearest rival (probably Rostami) has spent 2 of his 3 lifts. (You can’t necessarily always wait for all 3 to be spent cus he might have beaten everyone else with 2 and he’ll just put the 3rd at 225 since he doesn’t need to make it to win; he just needs to make you bomb.)

That weibo page has a Liao Hui 170+205 video from last year, has this been posted before?

Oh shit that’s gnarly. I wonder if he’s really around 69kg or if he was still around 74 or whatever he was when he competed as a 77 for that one comp

When he makes a heavy lift, it looks damn easy even with record breaking weights. The cleans are always spot on and incredibly impressive. Let’s see if he can top Rostami’s world record on the international stage.
