The jerks are looking much better now. Wow.

Unfortunately, I think this was pre-Olympic… Have no idea what kinda of form he’s in now

I think this after rio…he’s got custom antas from the looks of it. and if you look at the rest of the instagrams on mastrength’s personal instagram he’s got on the same goldish bottom antas. or it can be the lighting LOL
They are preparing for the Chinese Nationals which is next week I believe. So these weights can possibly in preparation for that.

I think the problem is just that he has a horrible case of nerves whenever he’s on an international stage. There’s no question he’s the strongest 85kg out there right now: he smashes in training and in national comps.

It seems like doing a power jerk is what he really should be going for but I could be wrong.
I still can’t believe my eyes whenever I see his 230 clean. Ridiculous strength in the legs.

I think so too. Or split jerk. Far be it from me to question the Chinese coaches, but there’s a reason every single standing WR is a split jerk. I can understand why someone like Lu would want to squat jerk because of his unusual levers, but Tian? I just don’t get it. Probably too late to change now, though. Even Shi, despite his relative consistency, would have been better served by a split jerk, imo. Granted, I think both Tian and Shi will eventually hold the world records. But they should honestly already have them in their pockets.

I know that split jerk just hasn’t worked out for Tian; in one of the interviews, his coach was saying that he tried to get Tian to convert to split jerk but his results were consistently lower (by 10-15kg IIRC).
However, you see that in some of the attempts, he does pretty well with power. It seems like he usually fails when he loses his balance trying a full squat jerk.
Anyways, he’s soon going to be the #1 in his weight class imo.
Gregory Foster says
That’s interesting, I never knew they tried split jerk with him.
In that video he appears to do power all the way up to 210kg (!). If he could somehow keep that into his top range, he wouldn’t have to worry about the balance as much. I feel like he should at least open comps with a power jerk, and maybe get lower for higher attempts (kind of like how Shi opens with power cleans… lol)
Gregory Foster says
Welp… looks like the Chinese coaches read the ATG comments 🙂
