A little bit of backstory …
After Russian championships Nat and I had one free day to spend in Vladikavkaz.
The day before I asked Tima Turieva if it would be okay for us to visit her during a training session, to which she agreed.
45 minutes prior to her 17:30 session we took off from our hotel. Usually there are taxis waiting in front of the hotel. Not this day though. It was pouring, so I guess the taxi drivers thought that no one would want to leave the hotel anyways. So we had the receptionist call us a taxi and lo and behold 15 minutes later an unmarked Lada stopped in front of the hotel.
Should have been a smooth 15 minute taxi ride … if it wasn’t for a somewhat clueless, but still very polite, taxi driver.
17:30: we arrive at what we thought was the location of the gym. Unfortunately the GPS was kinda off so we spent the next 20 minutes wandering around in the rain, making clean & jerk motions to random strangers and asking them if they knew Tima and or where she trains (neither Nat nor I speak Russian). Thank you Google Translate for letting us remain ignorant during our travels!
When we finally made it Tima was on her last of snatches (I think it was a 90kg double).
As you can see from the video the gym was full with young lifters, who were supervised by 3 coaches. Two of them, so I was assured by Kazbek Zoloev (Tima’s and Ruslan Albegov’s coach, 9 time Arm Wrestling world champion, weightlifting coach for 30 years), will be champions in 10 years.
Tima herself shared a platform with one of the nephews of Alan Tsagaev. No special treatment for world champions here.
Tom Bennett says
that’s cool that Zazbek was an armwrestling champ. I always see him at Worlds with the Russians.
