ATG on Tour Visiting the Kazakh Team in Zakopane, Poland

March 13, 2016 By Gregor Winter

Meanwhile in Poland …

After visiting the Kazakh Weightlifting team (Team Astana around Ilya Ilyin) in Poland last year [Videos here], I thought it would be fun to do that again.

So I drove down to Zakopane in south Poland where the team was staying in an Olympic training center.

I think I managed to capture some interesting footage. The editing of all the this stuff will take some time though. So be patient. In the meantime here are some teasers.

Update 31.03.2015: Friday Morning Training Session *Part 1*

Looking forward to the footage, Gregor.
By the way, what is the rationale for the Kazakhs to go to Poland to train in March? Is the idea simply to provide the athletes a change of scenary? Is there a special reason why they choose Poland? Does anyone else from outside Poland train at Zakopane?

They have a good relationship with Szymon Kolezki (president of Polish weightlifting) who helps them organize those camps.
There have been other countries training in Polish weightlifting centers. Just recently the Swedish team was in Spala.

Thanks. I can understand the Swedes going to Spain. Presumably it is warmer and sunnier there than in Sweden. Poland would not seem to offer the same change in the weather. But maybe the main thing is just to have a change of scenery, and if Poland offers that change plus excelllemt training facilities at a modest cost, it makes semse.

Why call “people around Ilyin” the Kazakh team? There’s not a single woman associated with Astana. Neither are Chontey, Kharki, Rahimov, etc.

I think people get/have gotten the wrong impression from these presentations.

Unfortunately 80 – 90 percent of all internet comments could be translated to: I hate my life and can’t appreciate any good in my life so I have to spread tons of haaate! 😉 Could that be?

I’ve Never seen him get that depth.
Hopefully he can maintain it and use it to catch at least a few extra kilos in Rio
