Cristina Iovu (Bronze in London 2012 53kg) is wanted by the Moldovan police.
How I understand it, she had a job in the Moldovan border police and is not allowed to defect.
Back on January 1st she went to Azerbaijan for a competition and was supposed to return by January 31st. And as you probably know, Azerbaijan is a pretty lucrative place if you are a weightlifter.
In Moldova she had a monthly stipend of 4000 Leu (120 USD). So I guess Azerbaijan easily topped that amount.
Now the Moldovan’s don’t want to play this game.
I understand that if she won’t return in the near future her case will go to Interpol and she will be “wanted”. She has no right to stay in another country and is breaking the law when staying abroad, “- said the president of the National Olympic Committee, Nikolai Juravschi.
Apparently in case of refusal return she faces a two-year suspension from all international tournaments and a return to “home” by force.
…
Just let athletes live and lift wherever they want!
If your country is not attractive enough for an Olympian, then don’t be surprised if people want to leave it.

sucks when it’s about politics instead of the lifts…

She’s welcome to stay at my place if she needs somewhere to hang her hat.

First off, I post whatever I like. If it is politics one day or cat pictures the other day
Corrected the wage (translation error)
“If it’s money she wants, apparently she can go and get some oil cash in Azerbaijan.”
No, she can’t apparently, and that’s the point of the whole story.

Well to be fair, he country did raise her and supply with the training, funds and materials required for her to become an Olympian. She has to give something back.

Hi everyone:) i know the situation from my country very well. Here sport is realy for somebody is a politic. She did very right that remaind in Azerbaidjan. Your information is not fully right. her wage was much more high, it was about 700-800$, but this money she spend not on what she need for life, ut only for sport, like vitamins, equipment and so on.The information gived by Moldavian Press about the way that police procide as well was wrong, she wrote a demision from the work before Azerbaidjan. Do not belive our press, they like to make fun of athlets, in the worst maner. Also i heared that Azerbaidjan promissed her a wage aproximative 10000 $, and ofcourse condition for training.
