Meanwhile in China …
The Chinese weightlifting nationals for women are currently going on.
And there have already been some great performances.
Most notably by Zhang Wanqiong (张宛琼) in the 53kg category.
She went 6/6 with
- Snatch: 98, 100, 102 (lift is at 21:55 in the video)
- Clean & Jerk: 122, 125, 129 (lift is at 51:20 in the video)
So her Total is 1 kg over the current World Record (currently at 230kg).
As with most national meets this does not count as an official world record, even though the athletes were drug tested after the competition.
Update: YouTube video of her lifts
Here is the video of the competition. Results scoreboard photo.
- Zhang Wanqiong 102/129/231
- Li Yajun 102/121/223
- Chen Xiaoting 98/120/218
- Yu Yuanyuan 95x/123/DNT
- 48kg: was won by Tian Yuan. She did 88 + 116. Video here.
- 53kg: Video
- 58kg: Video
- 63kg: Won by Deng Wei
- 69kg: Video. The winner got 122+140.
- 75kg: Won by Yue Kang.
- +75kg: Video. was won by Zhou Lulu with 142 + 181
Correction: I first wrongly identified the lifter as Li Yajun, and later fixed the error thanks to commenter Michael who noticed it.
Afferbeck says
I love how she’s wearing Adidas shoes and a Nike singlet!
Michael says
Wait… Li Yajun isn’t the name of the lifter you’re highlighting. She’s #2 on the scoreboard. She’s the one that wore the blue with gold/red stripes on the side (and yellow Romaleos) and failed her 103 snatch attempt (3rd) here.
The one you’re IDing in the red CHINA singlet with Adipower is Zhang Wanqing.
Source: I’m Chinese.

Thank you very much for the correction. I updated the post with the correct name.

The real issue here as usual when talking about the Chinese women categories is the sheer depth. 2014 EWC 53kg 1st place was 195kg, 2013 WWC 53kg 2nd place was 203kg. They have 9 respectively 5 women who can match or beat that which is madness. Same scenery with the supers. If not for Kashirina defending Europe, the Chinese could in theory take the first four to five places in the WWC.
It’s a real pity that we (in the west) can’t get a proper presentation with English commentary of these competitions because going by pure quality lifting these Chinese games/cups offer contests which are often unparalleled.
Afferbeck says
Yeah it would be great to see more of this, I didn’t even know it was on until this article popped up. I don’t so much mind the Chinese commentary, but being completely unable to read Chinese characters makes it tough to follow. I love how all the lifters in these competitions would medal at every international competition but there’s like 10 people in the crowd
Josh Pfau says
Sorry for my ignorance (new to following weightlifting), but why don’t national performances count as world records? Too much judge/tester bias?
Afferbeck says
I think they’re just not governed by the IWF so they don’t count alongside all the IWF competitions
Victor says
Apparently, the last comment by the announcer indicates that the winner earns the right to represent China at the Asian games, and the runner up earns the right to represent China at the Worlds, being Zhang Wanqiong and Li Yajun, respectively.
Eddie says
This is amazing. Do we know when the men’s competition starts?
Gregor says
I think it’s 24-27.04.2014
Victor says
Zhang Wanqiong, a Chinese female 53kg lifter totalled 7kg more that Govdeli Furkan, a Turkish male 56kg lifter at the Europeans. And looking at the score spread trickling down (259-224), he wasn’t even a low out-lier at all! Just noticed that LOL
