Previously at the 2014 World Championships …
Here is the 171kg Snatch by 27 year old Zhong Guoshun‘S (77kg). This was on his second attempt. After Godelli, who was lighter, made the same weight, Zhong missed 172kg on his third attempt.
With Daniel Godelli’s positive test, this lift will get Zhong the Snatch Gold Medal (as well as the Total Gold of course).

Is the man in the black jacket Zhang Guozheng?

Definitely loving this shot. Is he a higher up coach for the national team or just spectating?
DylanJM says
Yep he’s part coaching team now. I think he’s responsible for developing lifters in the heavier weight classes (85kg +).
Jerker Karlsson says
I wonder if they will get any athletes in 94 kg or heavier ready to Rio. China has many great lifters up to 85 kg, but none at the top tier in the three heaviest weight classes.
Gregor says
I am guessing we might see Yang Zhe again. Almost he can have a shot at snatch gold again.
Jerker Karlsson says
Maybe, but the total is out of his reach I’d say. He needs another 10-15 kg at least in the clean and jerk to compete with Ilyin, Nurudinov and the likes. The opposite can be said of Liu Hao in the 94 kg class. His snatch is far too low to get him a competitive total at the Olympics if he doesn’t improve it dramatically.
Where is the male equivalent to Zhou Lulu or Meng Suping in the superheavy class? 🙂
Victor says
Ai Yunan, but he’s not going anywhere near the podium except at the Asians. Yang Zhe’s leg strength is too low. He needs another 20kg on the clean and jerk to play with Ilya. Liu Hao has better potential than Yang Zhe because he’s younger and stronger but Kydrybaev seems like the future in the 94s. We’ll see if he’s consistent.
wlift84 says
Erm, Yang and Liu finished 4th and 6th, had Liu repeated his AG total he would’ve gone 4th as well. They both received WC silver medals after all. You can’t be that much more world class or on top unless your name is Ilyin. In relation to their light- and middleweights yes that’s underperforming. But in relation to everything else that’s very good.
Jerker Karlsson says
By “top tier” I was thinking of medal contenders in the total for the next Olympics, an extremely elite selection. Of course you are right in general, placing among the top five or ten at the World Championship means you belong to the best of the best.

If there are athletes who train at the same facility and there is a history of positive tests from those athletes (like Daniel Godelli and Hysen Pulaku) does anyone look into it further? Also, if Daniel Godelli snatched 171kg and tested positive, honestly what are the chances someone could do that unassisted in the same category? Are PEDs just considered part of the game, cause it certainly appears that way.

“Also, if Daniel Godelli snatched 171kg and tested positive, honestly what are the chances someone could do that unassisted in the same category?”
I absolutely DETEST this line of reasoning. What is the point of competing? How can you possibly determine some sort of human limit based on 1 individual? There are so many factors that go into athletic acheivement, whether it’s running a sub 4:00 mile or snatching over 170 kg at 77 body weight, you can’t just boil it down to 1 and say “lifter A accomplished this with drugs, therefore lifter B who also accomplished this is on drugs”
Truthseeker says
No Simon is just being realistic. Many people are naive towards the achievements in professional sports. Steroids have been around since the 30s and will always be around. Failed drug tests are mostly due to politics (Look at Bulgaria). Rare cases are when the team doctors make a blunder and don’t time the cycles right. Generally the countries with a lot of resources can get away with “failed” drug tests. I’m sure a lot of people have watched bigger faster stronger. I like the segment where the one guy exposes hundreds of failed drug tests of American olympic athletes that were covered up.
Victor says
Mostly, it is realistic that there’s a lot of doping, poltics, and dirty stuff involved in sports, but this sentence, “Also, if Daniel Godelli snatched 171kg and tested positive, honestly
what are the chances someone could do that unassisted in the same
category?” is not realistic nor conducive to competition at all. Makes it sound like lifting more than someone just means you took more PEDs.
guest says
Thank you, my point exactly. I’m not so naive as to think that every lifter is clean. I’m just as aware as anyone else on this board that drugs exist in this sport, and these conversations typically go nowhere.
That particular line of reasoning is especially idiotic, though.
Simon says
Thanks for the discussion fellas! The point is was trying to
get at was whether people had an attitude of “Yeah, everyone’s taking something at that level,
derr!” or essentially the reaction I got for hinting someone can’t compete on
the same level as someone who is using. Considering no one defended Godelli, it’s
pretty clear to me people do not tolerate PEDs in weightlifting, as obvious as
that may be.
mr_rogers says
BRB taking steroids so I can snatch 170+ @ 77kg
idiot frog says
Likely only the genetic elite who train very hard for years can snatch 170 plus at 77kgs. Most steroid users will never get close to that.
Victor says
“Also, if Daniel Godelli snatched 171kg and tested positive, honestly
what are the chances someone could do that unassisted in the same
category?”
Where does the line get drawn? If somebody snatched 130 and tested positive, what are the chances someone could do that unassisted? If you have that kinda mentality, we can all assume that every 77kg lifter would lift the same without PEDs and end the competition without lifting and give out a friendship medal for everyone LOL
Magneto says
Come on guys, Simon just raised some questions. He didn’t claim anything and he didn’t accuse anybody. Lets look at the other possibility that Zhong Guoshun is “unassisted”. What would happen if he used PEDs then? Would he snatch 190 and obliterate all records? Quite honourable of all the clean lifters to resist those temptations.
Victor says
He didn’t simply raise the possibility that Zhong wasn’t clean, which would be uncalled for as well, not because I’m sure that he’s clean but because if you doubt weightlifters who have passed all the tests, then who would you not doubt? He talked as though Godelli was some weightlifting god and you had to be on something or there’s no chance you could lift at his level. I mean, seriously, Godelli, of all the choices. Best non-popped score: 349.
