Zulfiya Chinshanlo 132kg Clean & Jerk + Shu Ching Hsu Total World Record

September 21, 2014 By Gregor Winter

Meanwhile in Korea … at the 2014 Asian Games.

The women’s 53kg was one of the tightest competitions in recent times. Here is what went down at the women’s 53kg session in chronological order.

Here is the scoreboard for that session.

Snatch

First Zhang Wanqiong (China) “wins” the Snatch with 102kg (“wins” because there are only medals for the total).

Shu Ching Hsu (Taipei) Snatched 101kg. Zulfiya Chinshanlo (Kazakhstan) missed 96kg on her second attempt, but got it on her third.

Clean & Jerk

Going into the C&J is where things got interesting.

Hsu starts of with 124. Chinshanlo answers with 125. After Wanqiong did 126 on her third attempt Hsu made her second attempt at 127kg. At this moment she has a 228kg Total.

With a 5kg disadvantage after the Snatch Zulfiya was still waiting to see what she had to do. Being lighter than Hsu she just had to match her 228kg Total.

So she gets the WR ball rolling and takes the 132kg Clean & Jerk World Record on her second attempt (watch her 131kg WR at London 2012 here).

You would think that sealed deal, because how often do you see WRs being broken multiple times in one session nowadays?

Shu Ching Hsu was having none of that. She also takes 132kg and makes the lift as well, thus setting a new World Record in the Total with 233kg. Having done the 132kg WR weight later than Chinshanlo she does not get credit for it.

In a YOLO attempt Zulfiya tried to go for the Total Gold medal, but a 5kg increase for a 137kg Clean & Jerk was too heavy that day.

This was crazy to watch. The Chinese lifter definitely looks like she’ll have a longer career lifting though. Much more consistent and sound technique

Zhang Wanqiong’s 102 snatch and 228 total were also new Junior WRs.
