Yue Kang 170kg x5 Squat Almaty 2014 Worlds Training Hall

December 2, 2014 By Gregor Winter

From the 2014 World Championships Training Hall…

Yue Kang (75kg) Squats 170kg x5, one week before her competition day. She did 150 x5 before that.

(Video also Facebook and Instagram @atginsta)

The 2 times Junior World Champion and 2011 Worlds silver medalist was a bit unlucky as she entered the competition with an old hip injury that flared up again.

She missed her Snatch opener at 126kg twice, before she made it on her third attempt. In the Clean & Jerk she only made her opener at 151 and then missed two attempts at 155kg. In the end she became second in the Snatch, fourth in the Clean & Jerk and third in the Total.

Note that 6 weeks earlier at the 2014 Asian Games she set international competition PRs with 131 in the Snatch and 160kg in the Clean & Jerk (missed the 164kg WR).

More from Yue:

  • 131kg Snatch + 157kg Clean & Jerk 2014 Chinese Nationals
  • Yue Kang 130kg Snatch +160kg Clean & Jerk at 2013 Chinese National Games
  • Yue  Kang 200kg Front Rack Hold

It seems like the hip pain hit hard in the split recovery of the 155 jerk. It was a solid attempt and then she just let it drop. Was clearly hurt backstage then and got timed out for the third.

The main thing to learn from this video is that great results in the squat do not translate into great results in competition. Despite her impressive resume and outstanding performance in the Asian Games, she went two for six and nearly bombed out. Maybe heavy front squats for five reps wasn’t the best thing for a talented, yet tired athlete coming off of a PR performance going into the World Championships.
