So I just spent the last hour watching these instead of sleeping at 2AM. Almost prefer these to competition footage, not really sure why. Could watch endless hours of training hall footage haha. Thanks Gregor!
weeee says
same lmao
MS Barbell says
Right here with you Ebby! I love training hall footage.

So Pat Mendes snatches 185 kg just a day or so before the competition. Is that common at that level? I was always told to take it easy the week before.
Does anyone know whether other lifters also lift that much right before the competition?
Ebby says
I’ve heard of it going both ways, but from what I’ve seen most people stop the heavy weights around 3-7 days from competition.
On a side note, I personally think Pat came in way too heavy and that’s why he bombed. The consistency at 185/200+ just wasn’t there. He should have opened at 175/190 or so.
Leon says
Randall Strossen wrote on Ironmind that Mendes and Broz were hoping for a medal in the snatch. Therefore they started fairly high. Mr Strossen talked to both of them after the contest.
I still think Mendes should compete much more often. All kinds of stuff happens at competitions. And the best way to deal with it is having experience. I wish he would perform well on some small meets to gather some experience to be ready for bigger events especially since he is clearly not the type of athlete that performes better under stress.
And I also hope he works on the power jerk. That is currently his biggest weakness. “Why clean a weight if you can’t jerk it?”
Ebby says
Thanks for that update, I didn’t know that.
“I still think Mendes should compete much more often. All kinds of stuff happens at competitions. And the best way to deal with it is having experience.”
Truer words were never spoken when it comes to weightlifting. I know so many gym lifters who have never competed but brag about their training lifts. It’s nothing until you can hit it at a competition.
Regarding the jerk, he needs to figure out if he wants to power jerk or squat jerk. Both jerk selection and execution are just inconsistent – thus the inconsistensies show when it comes time to compete.
mrtn says
competing more often is not enough. i dont know who has the last word – mendes or broz – but they are missing a realistic way to see themselves (and at the very least the coach musn’t).
this was mendes’ first big competition, he’s still a relatively young athlete. the first goal should be to make some experiences, acquire self-confidence and go 6/6 or something near this – and, of course, start with an easy first attempt.
if you see his 185 snatch, nobody can believe 180 is this kind of easy opener.
.
170/200 could have been responsible entry weights. if you feel good, you still can get in over 390kg – and you are leaving the stage with a sense of achievement.
lifting first time ever on big stage and pushing it too hard (thinking of a medal, lifting in the a group at any cost) doesnt fit. he has talent, i wish him a reasonable and experienced coach, who shows him the right way, in training and in competitions. he and his current team seems to be overchallenged.
Leon says
Actually he already lifted in 2011. Back then still in the 105+ category. He made his first attempt in the snatch with 172 and failed on all subsequential attemps.
Other than that I agree with your statement. Still he should lift more often. Even if it is not on a big stage. It is still different than lifting in your gym.
Concerning the jerk: I think he can’t generate enough power to bring the bar overhead. The squat jerk looks more like an accident.
mrtn says
yes, you’re right. he doesnt have enough power to bring the bar up high enough, i.e. like bedzhanian – and he doesn’t have the flexibility and precision to go in a deep squat position (and stand up again) like some chinese guys.
Phil says
Just food for thought – I’m unsure whether the 20 kilo rule was exempt at the competition, or if Mendes had lowered his starting list total from 406kg. I believe if he didn’t he would need 386kg as per the 20.k.r, 180/206 would have made that.
Ebby says
I think the rule was enforced and you’re bang on with this. For those curious:
6.5.7
The aggregate weight of the starting attempts in the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk cannot be less than twenty (20) kg below the announced Entry Total for the male competition, and less than fifteen (15) kg below the announced Entry Total for the female competition. The monitoring and implementation of this rule is the responsibility of the Competition Secretary and the Referees at the weigh-in; and of the Chief Marshal, the Technical Controllers and the Jury during the competition. This rule shall apply unless otherwise stated.
So then my question would be – Why did they post a total so high? Clearly he misses those numbers in training and only makes them some of the time (just look at the video posted on instagram above – it looks like he might have a couple kilo more than 185 in him at best and that’s in the training hall with straps). It makes no sense, besides trying to hit a snatch record and maybe get on television.
Bjoern says
I could imagine that getting into the A group and therefore getting TV Airtime might have been quite a factor for posting an entry total that high (for his capabilities).
Bjoern says
1st video ” training hall 13.11″ at 3:10. I want that shoulder flexibility!!!!!
Drewandy says
Watching the Chinese lift is so mesmerizing
RagE says
These videos are all awesome! why is there so little people in the traning hall? seems like the place to be, if you are able to get in.

A few things to consider about training last days before competition:
1) If you train twice a day heavy, 1 moderate training session 2 days before the competition is not as much as for someone who is training 3x a week. 1 moderate training is like resting for them, but usually most of the lifters are doing the last heavy session 5 to 3 days before.
2) Not all lifters are clean. Those who are not, recuperate much faster and train much heavier before. 15 years ago, when doping control was less strict, some lifters were lifting really heavy the evening before and some were even making training sessions a few hours before the meet!
wlift84 says
I don’t think there’s a “Team Astana” as such, or is there now? Afaik Ilyin is the only one sponsored by the President (through the KAZ wealth fund).

In one of these videos, I saw Fernando Reis doing a heavy squat. Unfortunately, I cannot find the right training hall video. Could someone help, please?
